So for the very small percentage of members here who aren't afraid of women, when it came time to propose how much did you spend on the ring? Did you use a rule of thumb like some used to based on a percentage of your salary or just get whatever fit the bill and your budget?

Got her ring at COSTCO..no shit and the diamond quality was great for the price compared to a jewelry store.

Oh yeah $7K one carat

I used whatever fit my budget.  I was in grad school and could not afford much.  Ultimately I spent $1400 on the ring, that was in 2006.

The "rules of thumbs" were often created by the companies selling the rings so people would spend more.

$3k last year.

And I let her pick it out.  Promise ring was a zip-tie.

I don't make a whole lot of money right now, but I spent around $3,000 I think. I got it last year.

Oh, was I supposed to buy her one of those?  The only ring I bought was the wedding ring itself.  We got married in a gazebo next to the courthouse.

You get the best diamond you can for the money.  Quarter carat near flawless is better quality than a 1 carat I class yellow stone.

No rule of thumb bullshit. What I felt comfortable, and had saved up to spend. 5k for engagement ring and wedding band.

$5000 in 1999, huge custom Emerald - she loves Emeralds, so no diamonds here.

I spend $6500 but I got a great deal. Appraised and insured for double that.

I don't know.

She bought it.

It was a set, engagement ring, male and female wedding bands.

not trying to be a dick, but appraisals of diamonds are bullshit. You could never, ever sell a diamond for it's "appraised" value.

Ha yes a lot of chicks probably only care about carat size.  A lot of chicks end up getting big pieces of shit.

It makes me sick to even type this...... 2.6 carat main diamond with a little over a carat in the side band total of 3.6 carats $13,000

She never got an engagement ring, we were poor and that money could be used for a lot more important stuff.
Still married after 32 years, and now she has enough jewlery to sink a ship.

$60.

Then we put 20% down on a house.

I could never spend money on a diamond.  Not worth it.

$4,000 and she's worth it but man did it hurt when the lady swiped my card.

Eta: I'm not some rich guy that can just throw down 4 grand like it's no big deal. I saved up for a long ass time. With what she was going through she deserved every cent.

$700 in 2001 when we were young and poor.

$7500 in 2008 after having a job and deciding that she deserved an upgrade.

ETA: Lo, arfcom, where you should cash in your 401K to buy gold, but jewelry is a scam.
