Ammo is like currency in that you can never have too much. Unless you're trying to swim or even just carry it...
But there are limitations to how much one can acquire. Also like currency, it can also be said that it isn't worth anything if you don't use it. For financial savings, there are basic rules like "save enough to cover your bills for X months." I know of no such rules for ammo. How much ammo would you say is necessary to keep in a "savings" status vs that you just intend to shoot? |

87 Rounds
There isn't a number, depends what you do. 20,000 rounds of 9mm would keep me going for a year or so of IPSC |

This much.

Someone posted in the mag whore thread:
If you can fill all your mags, buy more mags. If you have empty mags, buy ammo. Just do that till your house starts to tilt. |
|
Typically when I go to the range I take about 6 boxes of rifle and 6 boxes of pistol
I only shoot about half and when I shoot I don't load my mags to full capacity I load 10 in the rifle and maybe 5 in pistols. I concentrate more on the reload. When Im done the ammo boxes I didn't shoot goes into storage. I have also spaced out money 20-40 bucks per paycheck just for storage alone. Which helps quite a bit. |

When you think you have enough to wage your own war , multiply that much by a factor of 10.

I don't think ammo will get cheaper, so buy as much as you can. I don't know my exact numbers but not nearly enough.

View Quote $0.335 per round at that quantity for eastern Europe production? Oh hell no. At $0.225 I would buy a pallet. |

I think one should have a full load out for every weapon they have as a minimum. If you had to bug out unexpectedly, how much could you carry anyway?

Int depends the first question you need to ask is are you an Alex predator? If you answered yes you don't need much at all as you can kill the man with all the ammo and take it from him .

I by way more ammo than I shoot to add to the fort. My wife commented about how much ammo I had and my daughter told her its a good investment for the future. I think I raised her right!
Sorry no pics for you pervs. |

View Quote Obviously, if you're in a situation where you can just bunker down and wait things out then as much as you can store. However, that's not a realistic option for everyone and if you have to "bug out" then any ammo that you can't carry with you is wasted. I have a rule of thumb I like to go by to give me a bare minimum number. That is, enough ammo to fill all of your mags twice. (This is for bug out weapons of course, if you have 20 or 30 guns you won't be able to take them all with you) I figure if you can have all of your mags completely filled, then you'd be able to grab say two or three ammo cans that you could throw in the back of the car/truck to refill those mags without taking up too much room for your other supplies. Of course, if you have to leave on foot then that number will be reduced greatly, but it's at least a number to work with. You can adjust as you see comfortable. My two cents. |

For my own use - never less than 1,000 rounds per gun. My reasoning is if I keep 1,000 rounds, 5,000 projectiles, bunch of powder and (especially) primers that will do me for life. In 3 years in Vie tNam that's more than I ever fired. Plus its an amount you could reasonably tote off to the mountains if you needed too. I store personal ammo for protection, not for fighting a war.
As an investment, one can never get enough ammo. Right now I would say buy as much Wolf 7.62x39 as you can find as I expect the import of that ammo will be stopped. Course its still made in a number of countries other than Russia. 5.56, 9mm, .40, .357 and of course shotgun shells are always going to be in demand and in my opinion will only go up in price and get harder to get. If you expect to do subsistence hunting then a Ruger MkIII or similar with a few hundred rounds will bring in small game and even deer. The price of rimfire ammo is unbelievable, and it will only go up. Also even at these inflated prices it will still be hard to find. Remember ammo is heavy. Store it where you think you will need it. In event of a calamity its not practical to think you can lug 1/2 ton of ammo all over the place. I think ammo is a better investment than gold. |

1000 rounds of BRASS, steel does not count!
and at least a "few" mags (no less than 2). |

I try to load 500 to 1000 rounds a week. I am stockpiling 500 pounds of lead a month. I stockpile what I dont shoot.

Im doing cowboy action shooting and want to start 3 gun next year as soon as I can stockpile enough ammo. I just started getting serious about steady lead sources 4 months ago. Now its flowing in. Edit That lead number is per month not week. The reloading number is right. |

I only have a few thousand rounds of 22, but I have enough bullets, primers and powder to load probably 10 thousand rounds of various other calibers.

I can shoot a few rounds every day for the rest of my life(54yrs old) and have some left over
But not enough if I have too supply others |
|
I'd be comfortable at a store of 10k 5.56, 5k 9mm, 2k shotgun ammo and 2k hunting ammo and about 500k .22 lr
