EDIT - I ADDED MORE PICS TO PAGE TWO FOR THOSE WHO ASKED FOR THEM.  HOPEFULLY THE PHOTOBUCKET BANDWIDTH BUG DOESN'T GET ME

This is also posted in the LaRue section but I figured I would put it here for the photos.

Well, yesterday I had the honor and privilege to visit the Island of Iwo Jima and climb Mount Suribachi.  I took a Dillo along for the trip.

Here's Mount Suribachi in the distance

Here's a view of Mount Suribachi with the beach off to left where the Marines landed on Iwo Jima

Here is a view of Mount Suribachi from the beach where the Marines landed on Iwo Jima

It looks much different today than it did in 1945

As we all know, Mount Suribachi was the sight of this famous photograph

In this same spot now stand a Marine Memorial

The Dillo liked it there, so I left him on Mount Suribachi sitting on the Marine Monument surrounded by more history that most of us could ever understand.  I think he will like and appreciate his new home.

Thats fucking awesome.  Thanks for posting all those pics.

Are those dogtags from later servicemen?  Or WW2 vets?

I have never been there.

Thank you for posting this.

While I obviously can't speak for each dog tag on the monument, it is common practive to leave on of your dog tags on the monument when you visit.

A sacred place that I have had the opportunity to visit and bask in it's aura.

Glad you made the trip.

It's quite a chilling feeling isn't it.  Even making an attempt to imagine what they went through gives meaning to the phrase "The Greatest Generation"

Still there, I saw the entrance to one of the tunnels but we were only on deck for 5 hours so I didn't see a lot.

My Grandfather died a couple of years ago. He was there on Iwo Jima and saw them raise the flag from a distance. He had some good stories from the war. Papa was one hard working fool and very smart man. RIP Papa.

Wow, that's really cool.  Is there a Japanese monument?  There's one on Attu Island in the Aleutians, and the American vets don't like that fact at all.  Especially because it looks like something the Cylons designed

what an honor to be able to visit there.

I had an uncle that was there on Mt. Suribachi when they raised the flag on that historical day.

man i want to make it down there while i am on this damned island.

how did you arrange the trip? PM me for details?

Something tells me it wouldn't take very long to find an authentic souvenir of the battle if you poked around in the grass above the dune line.

Just as long as it doesn't explode...

I'd want something to bring back if I visited there.  One bullet, one empty shell casing...something small, harmless, and that reminds me of

the incredible sacrifices so many young men made in the name of freedom so long ago.

Great pictures –––– thanks so much for sharing them.  I am however still looking for the "dildo" you left there.

Can anyone go there to visit? Any infrastructure there to support "tourists"? How would a civilian get there?

Awesome.  Every time I hear the phrase "the Greatest Generation", I think of my uncles who served.

While none were in the USMC, one was a Higgins Boat operator during the Battle of Iwo Jima.  We never knew until his citations were read at his funeral.

Awesome post. Thank you.

I had a great uncle who was KIA on Iwo Jima. I have a picture of him hanging on my gun safe. As a prior service Marine, I have always wanted to go to Iwo Jima. I sometimes dream about it. I always get frustrated, because in my dream I'm in a hurry, and can't see everything I need to see.

Would you mind posting, or giving me a PM with some details of your trip? Thanks again.
