In Avionics school, our instructors cautioned us to RTFB, rather than making SWAGS about AM and FM radio operational theory. During written tests, it is also wise to RTFQ, before answering.
Although not an acronym, if you were called on to explain where you found the answer to a question, and lacking any better reference, the physical gesture of reaching around to the seat of your trousers and appearing to have plucked the answer from the orifice within occasionally yielded a second chance to research a better answer. RTFB= Read The F#@ckin' Book RTFB= Read The Full Question SWAG = Silly Wild A$$ Guesses AM = A Mystery FM = F#@ckin' Magic Semper Fi Dave (edited to add the ever essential "DILLIGAFF": Do I Look Like I Give A Flying F#@CK?) |

Gents, I think it maybe dependent on your social standing and whether you were correct in your assessment;
A Private would have to explain to his Sergeant why he made such a Silly Wild Ass (and incorrect)Guess. Yet, while speaking to peers or subordinates, a correct answer made without any foundation can be either a Scientific or Sophisticated Wild Ass Guess. But they don't need to know that! Correct answers made to superiors are correct, regardless of the source, and should be left at that. Just don't ask me to provide a reference for that! Dave |

SWAG is Silly Wild Ass Guess, how do I know? Because part of my job is SWAGing, folks call me all the time wanting a SWAG for different projects. They tell you a couple sentences about the project and you tell them how many millions it'll cost. Nothing scientific about that.
