Well, hell, if we're going to do this, I've got four Feathers, a dozen "barber" Personnas, probably 80 or so "med-prep" Personnas, and a five pack of Derby. I'm looking to try some red pack Personnas, maybe some 7 O'clocks.
Good man, OP.
I've got a bunch too, just sitting around since I settled on Feather.
Not sure of quantity of each but I will check and send them out upon request. I know I have some Astra (stainless and platinum), shark, sharp, crystal, 7am, and of course Feather. Nice offer bigrob, thanks for starting this off. |

Tagging for info on blades. I don't need/want any samples, just curious about other people's experience with different manufacturers.

TRG View Quote General consensus is the Japanese made Feather is the sharpest blade available for DE razors. I personally agree, and is my blade of choice when going DE. However, and just as important, is the head of the razor. You can have the sharpest blade in the world, but if you are using a closed comb, non-adjustable, you might not get the contact angle just right to get a great shave. I use a closed comb adjustable (Merkur Futur) on a high (aggressive) setting and I like it. I adjust it down slightly for the neck. My Merkur 34C is a non-adjustable, and it never feels quite as close. I use it for travel since it is smaller, and if I lose it, I won't be as upset. All that said, I usually use a straight razor when I have the time, so none of the DE combos ever truly feel as BBS as three passes with a straight. |

Thanks.
I have been using a non-adjustable DE for about 25 years. Long before it became 'cool' again. Last Christmas my mother gave me an adjustable DE that she said her dad (my grandfather) used. I have tried using it, but, I can't seem to find a setting that works for me. One day a "3" will give a nice cut, the next day it seems to leave hair. Same with "9", one day it seems to shave like a champ and the next it cuts me. Is there something about the adjustables that I am missing on its use? I keep looking at my old faithful non-adjustable and its faithful everyday shave ... I want to use my grandfather's razor for nostalgia, but, I can't seem to get it dialed in properly. TRG |

TRG, getting it dialed in is not just about the blade and setting.
When you start really paying attention, you can see how the angle changes over different parts of the face. Consistent angle is really important, just like when sharpening a knife. Also, hair seems to grow in slightly different directions on different surfaces. You need to find the grain and follow it for the first pass. Next you need to add a little more lather, and go across the grain. And if you want the best possible shave, one more time, but against the grain. Once you do get it dialed in just right, it just works, every time. ETA: Also, take apart Grandpa's razor, and make sure all the fittings are nice and snug. Maybe the mechanism is worn, and not holding a consistent gap across the egde. |

After the long 30+ page thread on DE shaving I purchased a mekur 180 off amazon. I have completed my first ever DE shave with the stock blade it came with and wasn't impressed, however I only have cartridge razors to compare it with. I'm assuming this blade isn't the cats ass. So the question is, the blades they carry at dollar general or a Walgreens, are they worth a darn? If so ill run up an grab a pack tonight. Thanks for any help on local blades fellas.
Oh and I also bought and used a badger brush with arko soap. Waiting on my bay rum/lime aftershave. ;) |
Generic pharmacy blades are usually unbranded Personna... should be decent. Beard prep is more important than the blade.
I mean if this goes tits up...
Thanks man! I picked some of from a local store today.
I had my second try lastnight with the same results of irritation on the neck area. Gonna give the new ones a whirl. |
I had the same issue with neck irritation. I found that using witch hazel before the after shave helped a lot. It cleared up completely when I realized I was putting too much pressure on the razor.

Dude, I was just looking for a few samples! You screwed up and sent me a years supply of different blades. TOO LATE, IM KEEPING THEM! NO TAKE BACKS!
Seriously, thanks a lot dude |

Still available if anyone wants some
