And the B-58 escape capsule. Each of the three crew members had an ejection seat equipped with this
capsule. When activated, it could maintain pressure and oxygen in the
aircraft in the event of systems failures, and the pilot's capsule had
controls with which he could continue to fly the aircraft. On ejection,
the capsules provided protection against the airblast associated with
ejection at supersonic speeds (up to Mach 2), and would float in water
landings, acting as a life raft.
