Mostly concerned with relablity. I just use it for net surfing and watching videos and movies. Im not a gamer or tech savy.  Opinions? HP, Lenovo, Toshiba, Dell and Asus all seem to be good options in my price range.

I have a Dell that was about that price. About 2 years old, seems to run fine.  Nothing fancy INSPIRON 15, 3000 SERIES.

I paid $400 for a refurbished inspiron 15R from the dell outlet 3 years ago and it's still running great. Keep thinking about getting an SSD but I haven't yet

Just a thought, but would a Chromebook do everything you need?

I am writing this on a 14.1" Dell dualcore i7, 8GB RAM, Windows 7.  Got it on fleabay for $290 delivered.  Added an SSD and a bay adapter to put a spinner in place of the DVD drive, and it flies.... all for  under $400.  Having said that, I haven't bought a "new" laptop in many years.
