I tried like hell to get the eclipse and a model in one shot today,.. but even with 3 AD200s and 1 AD600 a few feet away I couldn't even get a silhouette. Physics is dumb.

Conditions were wildly variable with our cloud cover. Five days out, the forecast was 100% cloud cover at dawn on Saturday, 50% at noon, and clear by mid afternoon. And, that's about the best way to describe what we actually had on Saturday. Gotta say, it was really depressing waking up on Saturday morning to the cloud cover, more so when I was packing my gear and heading to the square. And even more so when I got there. The, there were some ever so faint breaks, more heavy, dark clouds, more breaks, consistent breaks, haze and then clear skies by 1:30pm, local. Top photo: 80-400mm f/4-5.6 - 400mm 1sec f/11 ISO 125, ICE brand ND100000 (16 stop) Bottom photo: 80-400mm f/4-5.6 - 80mm 1/4000s f/11 ISO 160, no filter (clouds did all the work) It was pretty hectic stuff, filter on, filter off, and stuff. |

This one is covered up pretty much, I don't see how it could be a COC violation. Anywhose, they were all 4 second exposures and arranging rear curtain flash sync apparently requires 2 triggers and a shutter release. 1 trigger in my hand, shutter release plugged into camera and finally 2nd trigger mounted on the camera and set for read curtain sync. Did a pretty good job of minimizing ghosting, and I set it up centered above the camera and horizontal to also minimize any wonky shadows.
Lessons learned... 4 seconds is probably twice as much time as I need, going to try to work it down to 2 seconds. ALL the tubes look pretty much the same at night with a flashlight until you get a longer exposure, set them up beforehand. Models with dance.yoga experience are best for posing. Go over natural respiratory pause with the models so they're more comfortable staying perfectly still for a couple seconds. Don't assume the creek downstream of a waterfall you checked yesterday won't inexplicably be a bit too deep to set your camera in today. Don't assume the footbridge built by the city that is your alternate location will actually be square. With horizontal flash and low camera angle..... BRING A BROOM to any spots with constructed surfaces. Mosquitoes prefer blondes, bring bug juice. 20231018_015 by Carl Peters, on Flickr |
