by which I mean the laserlyte and and similar types  are designed to cost lots to own, even after you horribly over pay the initial cost to 'start up'

Hey I'm not sure if my search-fu is just that bad or what.  I know it's got to be pretty simple (for someone who knows how to do simple programming, which I do not ).

they have this "LaserLyte" horribly overpriced, unreliable (the laser projection device wears out and you have to spend money on it to make it work again, and again too much money; ie it's designed to wear out and cost you more money, lol 'wth??').

Can someone show me the link to a review on the sort of 'home made' software approach.  Webcam, timer, etc.  A webcam and a bright clear screen (like a small sheet of 'projector screen' type material.  This material is highly diffuse and reflective (so anything projected on it, like a laser, shows up REALLY bright and clear and crisp).

You shoot the laser/snap cap sort of device in your firearm.  A laser shoots on the screen/target (you can inkjet print a target I'd expect, or perhaps use a dang black marker).  The webcam sees the laser; it sees where the laser first appears and then wobbels to for the moment that it's on.  The computer attached to the webcam sees all of this, and records the initial location the laser dot appeared.  this is stored on the screen (think of it as a sort of 'video', but it only stores the frame where the bright red laser point first appears).

Just got to find a decent snap cap / laser projector that it designed to not turn on until it's hit with a firing pin.  *note I said 'decent', that have the other part needing a firing pin strike, but they also have the part the firing pin must hit to be made out of a low grade polymer, designed to fail before too long and retartedly overpriced to replace.  I think I saw like $30 friggin bucks to replace the back end only of a snap cap, Freak that Stuff (or something to that effect).

the downside, the person/peeps that produce this won't make a bunch of money (they'll make nearly nothing I expect), and won't be able to rape a few of us.  The upside, we get to practice the way the laserlyte and it's sort intended but without the need for sex jelly.    And the design for the snap cap, a collapsing spring in fron of the 'primer' that has overlaping contacts so that when the spring starts to compresss much at all (works for light pin strikes see), these little bits of conductive material make contact and turn the laser on for a fraction.  The actual part over the spring that will be struck... well wth is wrong with sizing it for a spent primer, just keep wacking the crap out of a spent primer and replace as needed.  (I dunno if this works, or how much abuse a spend primer can take), if not then I dunno, maybe a small ingot of soft brass that's threaded into a steel screw hole so only the brass ingot wears out.

Maybe there is not all of this in one go out there but surely someone must have done something like this and we can all go benefic from the software and some of this DIY approach.  I would work, work well (a halfway decent web cam don't cost a lot in them modern days we livin in), be really cheap and you could use a nice large target; pluss you can keep a long term record, *cheaply* of your progress over time, when tired as hell, when drunk, when hung over, when hungry, when distracted (like if there's porn on tv and the computer alarms for a practice run or something).  You could even set it to operate in the dead of night, waking you up on purpose and make you use the system, inthe near dark of your own house, while half awake.

and best of all; cheap and simple, simple is usually good

Bump :)

No one think anything of merit in such a cheap effective laserlyte substitute?  No one has heard of at least the web cam part of this existing somewhere (as a simple software program)?  Perhaps someone knows that it's actually vastly more complicated and difficult to do what I described;

1.) sheet of really white paper
2.) laser snap cap
3.) web cam
4.) software

Dry Practice

How come all the tech?

Set an alarm for a random time.

I was talking to a couple of guys that passed the Handgun Combat Master test.  They hung targets around their house.  Every time they would see that target they would Dry Practice that skill for that part of the test.

Both of those guys past the same day and were super excited after all the work.  They called their Wife's on the way home; first thing each Wife said "I am taking the targets down now!!!"

Old thread but thought you might want some info, the software has been developed more info can be found here: https://github.com/phrack/ShootOFF
As far as a reliable laser I think the SIRT system world work well, namely the SIRT AR Bolt FOR USE IN AR rifles. I'm waiting on my green one, but will report back once I have had a chance to try out with this software. Not the most economical solution, but I don't have all the required items to develop a better laser solution right now, so it will have to work :-)
