This past weekend I shot a mid-range match, 3x20 @ 600. Wind was real twitchy.
Compared my hand loads -  80 SMK (chrono 2750) vs the Black Hills 5.56 77 TMK (chrono 2850)
Both have a listed BC as 420.

In the end, the 77 TMK outshot the 80 SMK by at least 1/2 minute in windage and elevation.
Went back and forth but the 77 was always inside the 80.

Has anyone else suddenly had there world changed? I have almost 500 rounds of 80 SMK loaded for this season that might not get used.

Nope.

Several reasons.

Lapua 77 Scenars have had a BC of over .410 this whole time. And loads exist that will get them to 2850.

75 VLDs have a .420 BC and can be pushed to 2950 fps and are being used right now by a team,at that speed. Short bearing surface and loaded long,  NO problems.

Berger 80.5 full bore have a BC of .454 and I have a load with MR2000 that pushes them 2875 in a service rifle.......

so..... Nope, not at all.

1/2 a min isn't that much. The 75 VLD would be a min or more over your 80.... that's worth it. 24.0-24.5 gr8. H4895 jump.them .030-.040.

its science man. BC are equal one is going faster than the other.

The faster one is going to be better

75 AMAX have a higher BC than the 80 SMK but you can drive 75s faster so on paper the 75 will have less drop and wind deflection

Why do you think people are using the 75 VLD in the first place

I don't have problems shooting cleans at 200/300 with the 77 smk.

The 80.5 bergers have been great at 600.  Great bc and you can drive them fast.

I do want to try the tmk, it does look interesting.  I just don't see it adding points over what I shoot now...

I think I just realized I'm in a GEICO commercial. Everyone else already knew you could save 15% on car insurance.

The benefit of the 77TMK (AFAIK) is it improves performance in magazine length loads.

You answered your own question as both bullets have same BC but the 77s have 100 fps more velocity.  Maybe time to reevaluate the load for the 80s.  The TMK aren't exactly easy to find, either.  In the end, which one shoots better?  I'd give up 100fps for a tighter group anytime.

My 80 SMK's don't jump well, I load them to just barely touching the lands.  Max listed load of 8208 and they buck the wind well.

I find it much easier to just shoot 77's unless I'm at perry where the wind is crazy.

The part in red boggles my mind. My shooting buddy tried 80s and had the same issue.

A few years ago I had to switch service rifle uppers in a match and grabbed the ammo for the initial upper for 500yds. I shot a 195, which was a good score for me, jumping the bullets .150.

I've tried 75 and 80 AMAX but never had results that would lead me to change.
