Hey, folks,

New member here and just getting into Service Rifle competition (not new to firearms or shooting, but new to competition and the use of slings, coats, gloves, etc.) and I'm trying to get the sling on my AR situated.

QUESTION: When you use the sling in the prone and sitting positions, and you have the rifle mounted to your shoulder and you're ready to fire, should the rear strap (short strap attached to the butt) be tight?

I understand that the front part of the sling, between your upper left arm and the front attachment point on the rifle, should be tight when in use (thus squashing your left hand) but what about the rear part of the sling?

Thanks for any help. I did a search but didn't find anything here...

The rearmost strap is loose and should not interfere with the front strap in any way. Some people completely disconnect it from the rear swivel and others (including me) fold the rear frog (hook) over and hook it into the last hole so that it can't slide through the swivel and the frog won't hook onto your coat/mat/anything else.

Go with a "No Pulse" type and never worry about it again.....

Here are some other links that show the web sling and the leather sling.  By the way, it should be tight but not THAT tight.  You don't want to cut off circulation.

Found this video with a google search, VERY good instruction on the leather sling:
