I use a Rock River Arms LAR-15 NM rifle with 1/2 MOA sights for local and the National Matches.

One issue I have is that my shooting glasses touch the rear sight hood, as it extends out the back of the rear sight assembly.

I believe the threads are 1/4" x 28 tpi.  I'd like a 0.042 aperature in the hood.

Does anyone know someone who makes one ?

Thanks,

The hooded rear sight for the AR15 is a copy of the M1/M14 rear sight hood and is about 0.4" long. I had this same problem of scratching my shooting glasses. I had a machinist at work turn it down to 0.30" and that solved the problem (mostly). I can still crawl into the aperture, but that is all on me.
I believe that I saw a shorter hood for sale somewhere. It may have been White Oak.
The aperture size is not dependent on the hood length.

White Oak has the shorter size hoods, but the threads are different.
They (WOA) sell a replacement leaf, and 3 hood set that you could swap in.

The threaded rod is manufactured over sized, so to use that peice you have to ream the mating parts pf your sight base a hair larger.

(or you can go the easy way and just replace the leaf)

You can thread the hood on from the front, that's what a lot of my shooters do.

I heard that the White Oak and Compass Lake "shorty" apertures are threaded for 1/4" x 32 and not the 1/4" x 28 for the RRA and Bushmaster.

Might just have to go the White Oak route.

So if I buy the leaf and apertures, I can reuse the screw?  Will the pin for the knob need replaced?  I've never had my rear sight apart before.

Thanks again for everyone's assistance.

I use a Bob Jones Type II sight hood and replaceable aperture kit.  To alleviate the glasses hitting as well as improve the overall performance I flip it around so that the hood (which contains my lens) is in front and the screw on aperture is to the rear in front of my eye.

Only beef is he only offers down to .042 and I'd like a .036, .038 and .040 for those bright days.
