A neighbor's kid wants to go into smithing and asked my advice. Thought I'd ask the hive. He's currently taking metallurgy courses at a local community college. Also any recommendations on a good program/school to attend?

Tagged for interest.  I like the interdisciplinary aspect of gunsmithing.  It involves mechanics and machining, woodworking, chemistry, etc., etc. and requires a great deal of attention to detail.

Here's an interesting article on the subject: https://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/secrets-to-operating-a-successful-gunsmithing-business/

Starting out, it would probably be good to take armorer courses covering the major/popular types and manufacturers.

Glock, Sig, and any AR armorers course, for starters. A 1911 armorers course would be great, too.

Being a certified armorer for those will keep you busy enough until your get trained in other areas.

Food for thought.
