I want to see what public access is available for Fort Drum. I played a rugby tournament there years ago and they are rather hospitable.

I heard rumors of ranges being available by appointment with a trained RO. Is this still the case?

Can civilians hunt anywhere on Fort Drum?

A: Yes, Ranges are available for use and here is the procedure and requirements to do so:
First off a written Request must be submitted to the Public Affairs Office (PAO) and in this request a plan has to be outlined eg:
"The membership of the Great Lakes Rod & Gun Club request the use of Range One for the purpose of small Arms training and qualification.
Upon approval, Club Officers will present themselves to Range Control for Range Officer Training and will be present during the event.
All Federal, State, and DoD Regulations/Laws will be observed.
Hold Harmless Agreements, Registrations, and Insurance Riders will be submitted prior to and in a timely manner.
Basic Medical Support will on hand and Emergencies coordinated through Range Control.
You can add more information if you desire, clarifications, etc. in further correspondence.  Remember the "Who-What-When-Where-Why_How" concept keeping it short and too the point.
PAO request should be submitted 60 days prior to the event.
If accepted, The Garrison Commander is forwarded the request for approval as is Range Control.
With the exception of four Ranges (there's like fifty Ranges on the installation), all are outside the Cantonment areas so there is no need for Government Access Cards or Government Employee escort. (you can't go through the Gates unless you've got a Common Access Card or someone come to the Gate to sign you in, however there are special circumstances and prior authorizations)
If you get this far, LMK and we'll go over the logistics of the event.

Yes you can hunt, but not just anywhere:
Inside the cantonment area is Archery only, and you have to qualify with a Bow by making three out of five kill shots on varying targets from a Tower at the Dept. of Natural Resources Office by the Airfield.
Outside on the Ranges you have to register and then contact Range Control before going out (they assign areas open) and when you come out. It's not a big deal, the guys working there are all outdoorsmen who hunt-fish-camp and are willing to help out in any way possible so long as you're not a dick...you're asking to play in the playground they're responsible for; put yourself in their position.

Depends on what you want to do. A little tank gunnery, perhaps? Fire off a few TOWs?

Range 25 is 1,800 meters deep by a thousand wide and five miles of Impact Area beyond that....we've got nothing that'll go outside the Range.
Range Control sits down with you (part of that Range Officer training) to formulate shooting plans and solutions ahead of usage.

What about hunting ?   I spent 13 annual training periods (granted it was late spring to mid summer timeframes) there and never did see big game, unlike the moose and bear we saw at the Canadian Gagetown CFB in New Brunswick province.    But West Point has some hunting, as does Dix and I believe even Camp Smith, although at least the latter is bow only.

Sure there's hunting there.
We used to see the occasional bear, but I was more than happy to never see a bear on an AT or long drill weekend up there.
Not sure why people WANT to hunt and eat animals that spend their lives in the box up there, given all the nasty stuff in the soil and water....

All the "Big Bucks" are in the Impact Area where it's prohibited from entering (unless you're an Antwerp resident and won't obey the Laws anyways)
I've heard for the last 30 years tales of the land & water there, yet people are allowed by those in control and in the know to hunt & fish there.....then again, that might explain good many of the locals, course in-breeding does too.

When I came back up here, the first AT I did me an 3 other guys I was with were an IED task on a convoy route we were helping with training another unit that was getting deployed We saw a Sow with a couple of cubs and luckily they were about 100 yards away and were moving away from us through the woods. Don't remember the location or what ranges we were close to though. We saw them when we were resetting our "IED"(compressed air & baby powder) after a group had just gone through.

I've never hunted up there so I have no advice on any spots or the like. Buddy of mine who is on active duty wants to get me out there with him this year but if its anything like public land around here I would wear nothing but blaze orange.
