In General Discussion, I always hear people saying they like living in the West because there's so much land for public use.  Thing is, everywhere I go I see the land fenced off.  How do you find public land you can go shoot on?  Is there a location near El Paso that someone could recommend?

That's because they actually mean the West....not western Texas

I have seen some places in New Mexico that didn't have fences.  But there were 'private property' signs scattered around throughout.  Is there some website that shows where the public land is?  I don't want to just assume it's public when there's a fair amount of private land around.

And what is CJ?

Much further and I'll be in the People's Socialist Republic of Kalifornia!  Well, there is half of NM and AZ.  I'm guessing those states are the ones you are referring to?  Still, how do I find the public land?

Just google BLM New Mexico map.

You can find the public hunting land available through the Annual Hunting Permit (APH) and  Limited Public Use (LPU) HERE. You are in region two but I don't see any notations about those public lands allowing recreational shooting.

The sad truth is that while Texas has a couple million acres of public land, most of it's use is highly restricted when compared to the BLM lands in western states like AZ and NM.

I haven't checked any of them out myself, but guys I talk to in the area have mentioned three places just across the line in NM that they go to regularly. One is along Hwy 404 between I-10 and Hwy 213 - apparently there are a bunch of old quarries just off the highway. Another is out west in Santa Teresa - a DEA agent told me there is a gravel road following a big power line that leads to a quarry or draw in the hillside where lots of people shoot. The last one is supposedly up at Anthony's Gap, just east of I-10 up against the mountains. Hopefully that will help you narrow things down - I just haven't had time to go find any of them.

Thanks!  We will go try to find one or two of these places this weekend!

Of the places you mentioned:

1.  On the map as "Anthony Gap E. Shooting Spot" - looks like where we'll go!

2.  Can't be sure where this is.  See some possible spots but not with power lines.

3.  The spot you describe seems to be where the "El Paso Gun Club" is.

Go out to the end of Horizon Blvd up by the Hueco Mountains.  On your way there are some sand dunes on the right side.  These are the forgotten dunes,  anywhere out there you can shoot.
Several areas next to the old shadow mountain lake on the left side of the road.

I've been out that way but have seen people riding 4 wheelers in that area.  Plus, we don't have a 4wd so we can't drive cross country looking for a spot.

Pm cms81586 he is in El Paso and likely knows some good spots.

So we went out to the Anthony Gap E. Shooting Spot this morning.  The gate was closed and locked.  There was some sign about "mineral rights" or something but no clear explanation as to why it was closed.  Oh well, we'll try another place soon.  Maybe out near the Hueco tanks.  That's actually not far from where I live.

There is little if any public land in Texas.

An example of out west . . . . . .

My 2nd home is Bend Oregon,     It's just about in the center of the state.       You can start in the center of town and drive 30 minutes in just about any direction and fine open land to shoot on.

OR, WA get to the Cascade foot hills and east of there and you will find lots of open land to shoot on.

NV get away from the major citys, and the "other Gov lands" (area 51, groom lake, nuke test grounds) and there are lots of open places to shoot.

Same for UT AZ and NM, get out of the major metro areas and there are lots of public land to go play on.

East side of town...head east on Montana and the southeast on Conley. It's dirt and 2WD accessible as are the others above.

Thanks everyone!  Especially cms81586!  Yesterday, we went to the Anthony Gap place and the gate was locked.  But a little further down was another dirt road where we shot.  It was a lot of fun!  We are planning on going back tomorrow.

Went again today!  I tell you, the heat gets pretty tiring after a few hours at mid-day.  But we still had fun!
