Truth. It won't be cheap, but they can't keep ahead of what's happening to her.

I don't think so, at least not in anything stable.  From what I'd read it has a bunch of foam floatation materials in the bottom to keep it afloat but it can still take on water in other places and what it sounds like was happening is that it was in danger of tipping too much to one side.

If she was still in service she would have seen dry dock several times by now. Instead she's been sitting in the water, stagnant.

And holy jesus...a 6" x 8" hole?! That's some solid rust action right there!

Who actually owns it? The federal government, the state or a private organization? If the feds own any part of it, it will rust into nothing before anything gets done.

They already spent the $29 million the state gave them to dry berth it.  One of the pages I follow on FB says they need another $70 million.

It's sure an interesting piece of history. Built during an arms race that was so fast that the ship went from "top of the line" to "obsolete" before they finished building it.

I was going to get a piece of it until I seen the price list.
I donated a much smaller amount when we visited it last year.

Hope to see it again when we are there this summer.

That was a month old story that was recirculated on Facebook.  The leaks have been repaired and she is open to the public.

Is there still a way to purchase some of her steel?

I remember seeing a member here with an amazing desktop piece but when I go to the Texas' website I don't see any information.

Not sure about purchasing steel, but I've picked up a couple 1911 grips that were made from decking.
