Has anybody ever seen a badger in central Texas/Hillcountry? 99% sure I saw one in my yard just now but it moved too fast to take a pic.
Didn't look or smell like skunk. Thing was huge, like why is that footrest running across my yard big. |
|
Seen a few in south Texas like Cotulla, Eagle Pass areas but can't remember seeing one in central Texas |
|
I saw one when I was hunting near D'Hanis several years ago. He just walked out of the brush and started rolling around in the dirt road.

I've seen skunks and this wasn't a skunk. No smell, moved wrong.
It was way bigger too and gray instead of two tone black and white. Let the small dog out to pee, made it to the area the thing was when I saw it and turned and ran back in. If it was a badger cool, I'm gonna keep an eye out and try to get a pic. I was pulling into driveway and saw it in the headlights and it shuffled off for the high grass and trees immediately. I've seen wild turkey, wild peacock, melanistic bucks and does, pigs, and raccoons here so far so it wouldn't surprise me. |

seen several in south tx. Even had one drag a deer off I had shot and ate half of it before I got to it

/\ a badger dragged off a deer you just shot and ate half before you got there?/
Just wanted to be sure on this. |

I asked the same thing here a few years ago.
The answer is YES. I saw one in Llano. Lampasas HS mascot is a badger. Hope this helps. |

Only ever saw one, playing in the surf on Padre Island National Seashore around mile marker 30. Had to turn the truck around and look again it surprised me so much. Nastiest most ragged looking badger that has ever been. I'm guessing he swam over to the island from the King Ranch. He watched us watching him for about 15 minutes then wandered back into the dunes.

Should I shoot this thing if I see it again? Will it go after my dog?
Edit: I just realized I have a completely fenced yard. I threw some deer guts in a corner last week and something big tore a big ass hole in the "hog proof" fencing and ate the guts. That may be why I haven't seen him before. |

I've seen one in llano county, we had it on game camera too... Their tracks are pretty unmistakable, think big raccoon with huge fucking claw marks. They do walk a little funny, and yes it will definitely kill you dog if they tangle, I doubt even a full grown GSD would be a match for a pissed off badger.

Not exactly Hill Country - In 2011 saw one for the first time while hunting in Coke County about an hour South of Abilene.
I had just shot a deer at dusk and the landowner and I were following the blood trail. Saw the badger's eyes reflecting from my light. Badger would freeze in position every time the light was on him, but moved further away each time I focused the beam elsewhere. It was almost comical. Before that night I had no idea badgers existed in Texas (SE Texas native). |

Once, about 10 years ago a little north of the hill country towards the panhandle. Just waddled his fat ass across the road. Almost couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Coleman Co. The rancher said to shoot him on site, the porcupines too.

I found a dead one on our lease outside Llano. They are in Texas for sure.

I was hunting in Goldthwaite about 10 years ago and came upon a small badger chasing an armadillo. Quite entertaining.

Not Central Texas, but I saw two badgers together at night on our ranch in Midland Co. First time I had ever seen a badger! I let them be.

Have seen a couple up around Shamrock. Only heard of them in Central TX though.

Caught one in my parents yard in Menard county quite a few years ago. It was eating cat food off the back porch. It made the live trap into a cylinder.

Killed one in Paducah about 15 years ago. Taxidermist said it was the biggest one he had ever seen- though I suspect he doesn't do too many of them. It WAS a big damn badger though...The HK SL6 made short work of him though!

So the wife was reminding me (again) to do something. I tell her about this thread, letting her know I've seen a badger in our house. That did not end well

It WAS a big damn badger though...The HK SL6 made short work of him though! Are they protected or anything? No. A number of guides in far West Texas offer "predator hunts" and take badgers all the time. They are a "fur bearing animal" under the regs. As long as you are not selling them I don't think you need that "endorsement" on your license. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/regulations/outdoor-annual/hunting/fur-bearing-animal-regulations/definitions |

I think she raffled it off at some charity dinner couple years ago. |
