Does this mean my parents will have to have a US passport to do business at the local Social Security office?

WTF, over?

It also means vendors (Coke, Pepsi, Frito-Lay, etc) will not be able to get onto a military base to work in the base exchanges without a US passport. It also means you'll have to have a US Passport to fly on an airplane.

Our great state leaders have only had 12 years to figure out how to do this....

I am not a guy that subscribes to conspiracy theories, nor am paranoid about big government socialist smothering of our rights. BUT; I am of the view that , Why should SC comply with yet another dictate from Washington on a state controlled responsibility such as driver's licenses. I know the requirements are probably well intentioned from the 9/11 aftermath to make ID verification conform to a nationwide standard. But as far as I know, the Feds are not picking up any of the tab to make the changes. And, doesn't these rules create a defacto federal ID card? I believe there are privacy and states rights issues involved here.

So all the low/fixed income people that go into the Strom Thurmond building for Soc Sec needs/file their taxes for free will need a passport to enter? I don't see that happening.

And I am just a dumbass with Google search skilz and a background in public company processes.  I looked up Real ID compliance last night and spent about 30+ min reading to post a smartass answer here.  Much to my dismay, I couldn't provide smartassery to poke the SC Gov bear.  What I learned is it ain't clear what the FedGov wants to achieve even with grants to "help" the states comply.

A compliant ID requires the DMV (aka ID issuing authority) to verify birth certificate, SSN, two proofs of residency, and a partridge in a pear tree.  How the DMV can ensure validity of 4+ identification items is a big challenge to the states.

Should keep it "simple" - like an I-9 form? or voter registration?

Sucks to suck. I'm a reservist so I have my Military ID and a TSA TWIC Card. If you're smart, you'd get a Global Fast card. Gets you TSA Pre-Check anyway. Move through the airports faster. Forget the DL. Use it for driving.

The REAL ID was passed by the house, amended and passed by the senate, and sent back to the house.
The house just voted to concur with the amendment.
The bill will now be ratified and sent to the governor for his signature or veto.
