Mrs. Miami_JBT and I have been wanting to buy a piece of property somewhere in the north. We're figuring some revenge on you snow birds for invading Florida!
We originally thought about Alaska but it is to far. Canada has always called to us. Soooo.... where should we look? Something in the woods but not to far from civilization. We're city slickers but want a little piece of peace and quiet with snow and trees. Also since we aren't Canadian citizens what hurdles do we face? I would like to keep a firearm or two on the property we would buy. A Remington 870 shotgun and a M1 Garand a Enfield No1 or No4. I vaguely understand the PAL and ATT. So what do we need to look into?

[#1]
A PAL is a possession and acquisition license..anyone that wants to own a firearm needs one. You need to take the Canadian firearms safety course
http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/safe_sur/cour-eng.htm The ATT is our Authorization To Transport. you only need that if you intend to buy, own restricted firearms (handguns and certain rifles like AR's) As for leaving your firearm at your property here..as long as it is stored with in the safe storage rules you are good. Whether or not you want to leave it in an unattended building is a different story. I'll have to do some research but you might be better off bring them with you and taking them home. |

Thanks for the info... I will be researching myself. Mrs. Miami_JBT has been to Montreal before for business and loved it.

you can look in Ontario - look north of the Barrie area on www.mls.ca - you can find some nice land in the area of barrie and 2-4 hrs further north.

the feds determine accessibility.
Canada Firearms Program page I would be more inclined to buy your guys up here. it'll be less of a pain to keep them here. If you plan on bringing them back, then you can likely do a temp export for hunting - read you need a hunting licence. Regarding restricted firearms - you Do Not need to belong to a club, however the administration of restricted firearms has been downloaded to the provincial Chief Firearms Offices. in Ontario, it is the OPP who acts as the CFO. THE ARE ANTI GUN - they will try and say you need to belong to a club even though you dont legally. Mark |

I have quite a large collection of MilSurp bolt actions and semiautomatics that would be legal in Camada. If everything turns out right I plan to keep them up there once I import them into the Canada. Also I have some pistols too that are on the restricted list.
I don't plan on taking them back amd forth between the US and Canada. Basically have my Canadian set and my American set. The ARs, AKs, NFA guns, and most handguns can stay in the US. The Bolt Actions, Lever Actions, some of my larger handguns, and some pumo action shotguns can stay in Canada. |

better than More-ee-al (montreal) !
Remember a couple of things regarding handguns - - 25 and 32 cal - prohibited - barrels that are less than 105mm (4.13") - prohibited - handguns with barrels less than 105mm - prohibited - regardless of caliber, handgun mag capacities are limited to 10 - no exemptions Mark |

Part of the requirements set forth by Mrs. Miami_JBT are the following.
1. Near a major international airport 2. Indoor plumbing 3. Near a major city for modern conveniences 4. Indoor plumbing with electricity Everytime we see something in Alaska... it is too remote. We are city slickers from Tropical places like Miami and San Juan. As for the guns... Would some of these be legal? M1 Garand FN49 SKS Glock 17L (6 inch) S&W Model 686 (6inch) Rock Island Armory 1911 Colt Commander 1911 Ruger GP100 (4.2 inch barrel) Winchester SpeedPump 1300 Defender (18 inch barrel) Browning BPS High Capacity (18 inch barrel) |
|
[#11]
The SAFN49 - if it is a converted auto - previously FA and now SA only, it'll be a prohib firearm. Your SKS will need to be limited to 5 rds only. if its a detachable mag converted one, then you can likely just buy pinned 5 rd mags up here. That said, a rivet pinning the DM will work for our laws. If not a DM version, then you will need to have a permanent block put in.
Airports changes things. I would search all the Canadian Airports and work an hour out from there. Mark |

the 10 rounds will need to be blocked permanently to accept 5. The common term would be 5.5 to allow the bolt to close.
The Garands are exempt as the Criminal Code exempted them. I suspect someone was able to articulate that to block an enbloc to 5 rounds would be detrimental to the functioning of the gun so they bought it and exempted it. I am just guessing here. Mark |

Oh, I understand firearm law. Been studying it a little bit. I used to be a a Federal Firearms License dealer and deal in NFA items and remember.... I'm a cop so understanding the law isn't an issue.
I figure the best course of action is to take as many of my non restricted firearms as possible and leave as many of the restricted and prohibited firearma in the states. My M1 Garand and Bolt guns are great self defense firearms as are my pump shotguns. My question, is there a restriction on ammunition capacity in bolt action and lever action rifles? Also there are no restrictions on a .22LR rifle correct? A Ruger 10/22 with a 50rd drum mag is legal in Canada from my understanding of the law. Would a Kel-Tec KSG be legal in Canada? Everything is a pump except for the FN SLP. They're all over 26 inches in lengths with barrels over 18 inches. Storage can be in a safe unloaded with loaded magazines not inserted into the firearm and all handguns are on the restricted class except for .25 and .32 cal pistols. They're prohibited by law and those with a barrel length under 105mm. So a Smith & Wesson Model 686 with a 6 inch barrel is legal in Canada with a PAL and ATT for restricted firearms. Same with a 1911. |
|
[#18]
pump shotguns are GTG - you can have a 600 rd mag on it, smae with a Boltgun for the most part - except ones that are advertised as using AR-15 mags. The semi shotty has to have the mag plugged to 5 rds of CHAMBER LENGTH - ie 3 inch chamber plugged to accept 5 3 inch shells. The 10-22 mags are now in weird territory - RCMP decided that the mag for the BX ruger pistol makes the mags prohibited as they are over 10 rds. This isn't law yet and is the opinion of an analyst right now. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Hopefully uncommon sense prevails.

It is a pump action shotgun with an overall length that is greater than 26 inches. Legal under Canadian laws from my understanding.
Now explain to me the vehicle transport laws. I can keep that shotgun in the truck unloaded with a box of slugs next to it? Can the firearm be "unsecure" or must it be locked in one fashion or another such as cable lock or locked case?

I figure there has be to some. not that I'm aware of. I've never left a firearm in my vehicle unattended before though. As for the restricted PAL..it's a money grab to take the course...but believe it or not..it is easier to buy a restricted firearm now then it was when we had the FAC. If you bought one then..you had to have it shipped to your local police station..where it sat until you got it registered in your name. Then..the firearms officer at the police station would issue you a permit to take it home and another one to take it to the range. Now..seller contacts the firearms center, gives tehm the certificate # for the firearm and your PAL #. They provide him with a transaction #..he gives it to you...you call the firearms center, give them the #, they transfer the registration to you and give you a "number" that references a temp ATT to take it home. You can do all that by passing the phone back and forth between you and the seller. At gun shows they usually will have a firearms center rep there that does it all right there for you. |

God, don't buy anything in Ontario; but if you're hell-bent on living in that Liberal shithole, look at Kenora. It's close to Winnipeg and meets all of your other criteria.
Alberta is THE place to live. There are tons of little towns around Calgary or Edmonton that don't cost a ton but are still "out of the way". |
