Got this email from NRA today:

Thank you to everyone who attended Saturday's hearing on NRA-opposed House Bill 44, legislation by anti-gun state Representative Miguel Garcia (D-ABQ) that criminalizes non-dealer firearm transfers at gun shows and takes the first step towards a universal ban on private gun sales.  After hearing several hours of testimony, the Republican-controlled House Committee on Regulatory & Public Affairs voted to table the measure on a 4 to 3 party line vote.  Please thank the following committee members for opposing HB 44:

Representative Yvette Herrell, Chair

Representative Bob Wooley, Vice-Chair

Representative Nora Espinoza

Representative Jim Smith

February 19 is the deadline for bill introduction and we will continue to monitor the filing of legislation for measures that restrict our Second Amendment rights.

Several NRA-backed measures which eliminate the mid-term, two-hour refresher course for concealed handgun licensees and make other key reforms to the state’s carry laws are on the move.  New Mexico is the only state in the country that imposes such an unnecessary and burdensome training requirement on its license holders.

Last week, the Senate Public Affairs Committee unanimously approved both Senate Bill 118, sponsored by state Senator Steve Neville (R-Aztec), and Senate Bill 268, sponsored by state Senator Craig Brandt (R-Rio Rancho).  Both bills eliminate the mid-term, two-hour refresher course and fingerprint requirement on renewal license applications.  (SB 268 also removes the category- and caliber-specific restrictions for training and licensure and exempts active or honorably discharged military service personnel from application fees and firearm qualification requirements.)  SB 118 and SB 268 now move to the Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration.  Please call and email committee members and urge them to support these two bills.  Contact information can be found here:

House Bill 106, sponsored by state Representative Paul Bandy (R-Aztec), eliminates the mid-term, two-hour refresher course for concealed handgun licensees and fingerprint requirement on renewal license applications. HB 106 was approved by the House Regulatory & Public Affairs Committee last week.  HB 106 now moves to the House Judiciary Committee for consideration.  Please contact committee members and urge them to support this measure. Contact information can be found here.

House Bill 189, sponsored by state Representative Randy Crowder (R-Clovis), eliminates the mid-term, two-hour refresher course for concealed handgun licensees and extends the term of a license from four to five years.  Carry licenses issued by every state bordering New Mexico are valid for a period of at least five years.  HB 189 will be heard by the House Safety and Civil Affairs this coming week, so please contact committee members and urge them to support this bill as well. Contact information can be found here.

This could be the best chance we have to get these ridiculous requirements repealed. Here is a copy of what I sent.

SB's
--------------
Dear Senator and Staff,

I strongly encourage you to support both SB 108 and SB 268.  These bills undo the unnecessary and burdensome requirements for a New Mexico citizen to protect their family.  These bills will also help mothers and fathers better protect their children and reduce the financial burden placed on them by the state. You can help right these wrongs by supporting SB 108 and SB 268.  As a New Mexico citizen, I will gladly contribute to the campaigns of anyone who runs against those who will not support these bills.  Thank you for your time and consideration.

HB's (FILL IN 106/189)
---------------
Dear Representative and Staff,

I strongly encourage you to support HB XXX.  This bill undoes the unnecessary and burdensome requirements for a New Mexico citizen to protect their family.  These bills will also help Mothers and Fathers better protect their children and reduce the financial burden placed on them by the state.  NM is the only state that imposes these extremely discriminative and burdensome requirements.  You can help right these wrongs by supporting HB XXX.  As a New Mexico citizen, I will gladly contribute to the campaigns of anyone who runs against those who will not support these bills.  Thank you for your time and consideration.

Anyone emailed the committees?

Yes, I have emailed committee members and urged them to vote for all the NRA backed bills.

My fingerprints don't change every 4 years and the two year firing qualification is unnecessary expense and problem to find an approved instructor in a required timeframe.
