By Eric W. Bolin
Arkansas News Bureau - [email protected]
FAYETTEVILLE — You can call the Arkansas linebacking corps unheralded. They don’t mind it. They know it to be true, even.

Right now, anyway.

The Razorbacks returned to spring practice for the first time in almost two weeks Tuesday as the school resumed from spring break. The hottest day of the year combined with the long time off made for tired bodies in the afternoon sun.

And nowhere was that more evident than at linebacker. The unit is shorthanded and inexperienced. It’s the biggest question mark probably on the entire roster. Only Brooks Ellis returns as a full-time starter and even the position coach is a new one. Names appeared on the spring depth chart that left heads scratching.

Though they may be an unheralded group, don’t expect them to be the weak link, either. It’s teeming with potential.

Soon-to-be sophomore Khalia Hackett is a perfect example. He had 10 tackles in 11 games last year, mostly as a special teams player. He’s currently listed as the starting strongside linebacker. Former Razorbacks linebacker Martrell Speight is the reason why.

“I was good at it physically (last year), but mentally, I wasn’t into it. I was always in trouble and stuff,” Hackett said. “Martrell Speight pulled me aside and he just talked to me. Sitting behind him in the meeting rooms and stuff, how he’s answering all the questions and I’m just listening. How much work and effort he put into it was really what I really studied. He’s always sitting in the meeting room with the coaches, going over the plays.”

Something about the way Speight handled himself away from the practice field really got to Hackett. First-year linebackers coach Vernon Hargreaves can’t get 230-pounder out of his office this spring.

And that’s important, too, figuring the dearth of bodies.

Ellis, obviously, is a returning starter, though he’s moved from his spot in the middle last year to the weakside this spring. His understudy last fall, Josh Williams, is taking over in the middle after earning two starts when Ellis was hurt in 2014. He, too, was a likely choice. But elsewhere? It was a matter of plugging gaps with whoever stepped up................

What the heck, I'll sound off.

All W's except TN/AL and LSU.

If win in Knoxville, loss at Tuscaloosa; if loss at Knoxville, win at Tuscaloosa.  Hogs usually flip the on/off switch to the opposite position at least once a season.

So, you are the guy in charge of bumping this thing back up for 5 months?

GO HOGS

I'm excited, Knoxville could be tough but I can see a win at LSU and a possible at Tuscaloosa

Friend,

Your zealotry transcends mine.  I will believe the progress when I see.  UA (in every sport) seems to crap it's pants whenever it's nut-cutting time.   One NC in BB, and a questionable one in FB (football writers association of america, one of whom is Wally Hall?).  Baseball.  I can predict it so precisely I win tons of money betting against.

We need to shed that and get the shit done.

There's no reason AR shouldn't be in the mix every year.  OK, OH, LA, OR, AZ?  Come on, why not us?

P.S.  I wish I could watch, we quit pay TV and haven't seen a hogs game on broadcast TV in over a year.  Mostly listen on radio.  I would like to see one, though.

Posted under the influence.

But I stand by my stance that UA needs to bulldoze all these programs.  UA draws in boatloads of $$.

Realistically, alumni care nothing about academics.  We want braggin rights in sports.

http://www.arkansasrazorbacks.com/arkansas-ranked-in-preseason-coaches-poll/
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Razorbacks are ranked No. 20 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll, released by USA Today on Thursday.

It marks the first time the Razorbacks have been nationally ranked under head coach Bret Bielema and the first time the program has earned a spot in the Amway Coaches Poll since Sept. 9, 2012 when Arkansas was ranked No. 21. The Razorbacks entered the 2012 season at No. 10 in the preseason rankings............

And this

http://cfn.scout.com/2/1567258.html
7. Arkansas
2014 CFN Season Ranking: 41 2015 Prediction: 10-2
3 Best Players: 1) TE Hunter Henry, Jr. 2) RB Alex Collins, Jr. 3) RB Jonathan Williams, Sr.
Relative Strengths: 1) Running Back, 2) Offensive Line, 3) Defensive LIne
Not Quite As Strong ... 1) Receiver, 2) Secondary, 3) Quarterback
The season will be a success if … Arkansas comes really, really close to winning the SEC West. There might be too many concerns on defense and not enough pop to the passing game to win the best division in college football, but Arkansas should be a major player. Getting to ten wins is a must if the Hogs are able to own their home games, and if they can split the road games at LSU and Alabama – and can get by Ole Miss in Oxford – then look out.

My biggest concern this year is the same as last year...Brandon Allen.

If he is solid, I think we get over the hump and win the close ones we couldn't pull off last year.

But he was getting better when he left.  The One Before Him only had one 10-win season (in his 10th season?), and was 5-4 in bowl appearances - none of which were BCS bowls.

I said it two years ago in a couple of interviews (and a bunch of people got their panties in a twist), but BB was an absurd hire from nearly any perspective, save from an administration that was all but begging for a date to the dance.  They took the first ugly, fat one they could get.  He did well at the third-best Big 10 team when the first two were at their worst in a decade or more, but certainly not well enough to believe he could take over a program in the midst of turmoil and make it even remotely competitive in the nation's toughest conference.  He runs on emotion, he's arrogant beyond reason, and he's managed only to put one foot in his mouth as soon as he gets the other one out.

Maybe he'll be able to get some kids to buy in and start playing well enough to not get absolutely trounced through the SEC, but he'd better get the tears rolling.  And maybe once the abortion of 2015 is over the administration will pull its collective head out of its ass and put the money on the table.  They could buy nearly any coach they want.  I'd say hire Hugh Freeze, but I like him and I wouldn't wish that on him.

But I've been of the impression for some years now that most of them don't want a powerhouse football team.  They want one just good enough to pad their country club memberships, but not so much as to steal their thunder and create any serious expectation.  I just can't believe that a guy pegged to be Chair of the CFB playoff committee could be so misguided unless something was going on over his head.  That or Arkansas Football has been banished longer than Moses.

The dumbass could have built a power house here and threw it away.

From wiki

The Razorbacks ended the 2008 season with a record of 5–7 (2–6 in the SEC); The two conference wins were over Auburn, and a last second win against LSU in the annual Battle for the Golden Boot.

Under Petrino, the Razorbacks showed significant improvement in the 2009 season with analysts from both ESPN and CBS regularly citing starting quarterback Ryan Mallett as one of the most impressive collegiate quarterbacks in the country. The Razorbacks came close to upsetting the No. 1-ranked Florida Gators on October 17, 2009.[15] That game culminated in a controversial fourth quarter personal foul call on an Arkansas lineman. The resulting 15-yard penalty allowed the Gators to continue what turned out to be their game-winning drive. The SEC ultimately issued an apology for the call and suspended the officiating crew.[16]

The Razorbacks also enjoyed success under Petrino in the 2010 season finishing 10–2 and notching their first BCS bowl appearance, against Ohio State. In the Sugar Bowl, Ohio State built an early lead behind the play of Terrelle Pryor and Daniel Herron, but Arkansas came back in the second half. As the Razorbacks were driving for a go-ahead score in the final minutes, Ryan Mallett threw an interception near the Ohio State 20-yard line, and Ohio State ran out the clock.

The Razorbacks won the 2012 Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas, defeating Kansas State by a score of 29-16. The Hogs concluded the 2011 season with an 11-2 record, with their only losses to Alabama and LSU. It was just the third 11-win season in Arkansas' 119-year football history.
