So I need a new place to go deer hunting (firearm) this year.  I have never hunted on public land before so I'm not sure where a good place to go in eastern nebraska.  anyone have ideas on where I can look?  i need to find an area to go to so I can get my permit.

i hate hunting private land, especially the eastern side of the state during deer season.  too many crowding the public areas.  if i was you, head a few hours west and north.  find something up there.  less people.  also, try your luck on asking for permission, but prepared to hear "No" a lot.

there are other Nebraska hunting forums, they might point you in a good direction as well.

good luck!

Just an fyi any public hunting land near or around Lincoln will not get you anything. The private land I was given permission on to hunt last year has a small public area to the west, and another private owner to the south, and despite all my time gathering pics from game cams, and finding game trails, the first shots of the morning always came from the douchebags to the south! Pretty sure they had feeding stands set up, as they were there all day shooting opening morning.

Just my experience near public land around Lincoln. I'd go west or north like what was said above!

I've been gone from Nebraska since '93.  Why all the "no?"  To many dipshits not asking permission or Fudds?  Just curious.  I would always ask permission to hunt, birds mainly.

thanks, i'll look in to northern neb too.  I was hunting out by Cozad for the last 15 years but that's not an option now.  it was decent hunting.

both. although its really nothing new, the general disregard for common sense has manifested itself in all aspects of life these days, even hunting.

There's dipshits everywhere.

The Nos come from several things, not knowing the person, the person not knowing the land or boundaries, family is hunting it, friends turn to hunt, landowner paid by someone else for hunting rights, reducing harvest on the land (heard that one during EHD stuff) or a basic I don't feel like it. Usually if the hunter says does only, they have a better chance of getting on.

Or the hunter you let on copies the key and gives it to his friends. Or random people don't understand what a fence is and trespass anyway, while blocking the house driveway. Or having your nice new deer stand (that you mounted on a trailer for mobility) stolen off your property before you got to use it. Or finding bullet holes in your garage. Lots of reasons.

Look at some of the public ground down around Alexandria.  Don't go opening weekend.  During the week it will be wide open.  Last weekend will probably be decent too.

I have only been there once, but Red Tail, might be OK. I only think so because access is not super easy. You would need to walk a good distance, and people are lazy.

McKelvie National Forest can be productive if you hunt  it when pressure is lower (Not opening weekend). Muzzle loading season it does really well.

Valentine NWR is also open for deer hunting, but Fort Niobrara NWR is not outside of archery, IIRC.

EDIT: Just noticed you said eastern Nebraska, sorry.
