I am interviewing for a job in Nebraska. What do I need to know about the state? If I get the job I will be moving in from Virginia.

Your post is kind of vague.  In the absence of any details, look down ~3-4 entries.  Your general question I was answered there.  Good luck.  If you're liberal/ socialist I hope you don't get the job.  Nebr is full if you're a democrat.  If not welcome aboard.

Really, I'm asking a question on this site and you think there is a snowballs chance in hell that I'm liberal. The job would require a lot of travel across the state, but I would probably be based near Lincoln. I know it gets cold there, but I have never lived in a climate like that. What do I need to be prepared for the winters?

Coats. Hooded sweatshirt, windbreaker of sorts, heavy coat.

Beyond that, not much. Its flat, wind is an issue.

Welcome to NE, but please if you are illiterate move to Missouri after all it looks like v188 needs a friend

And before the 3rd graders retort I may lay head across the river a few miles in Iowa, I do work and own property in NE!

Like any upper Midwest state, shorts and flip flops need to be stored in winter

Oh and do you like the Huskers? It is a requirement to at least be able to carry on a conversation about the Huskers if you want to live here.

What's the real risk of tornados?

I'm looking at an area between Columbus and Lincoln...

Columbus hasn't been hit with a tornado in memory. The legend is that its north of two rivers, and that's why. In reality? Not very high, but make sure to have a "gun safe" poured into your basement.

The job opportunity is still in its infancy, and maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit, but Nebraska wasn't exactly high on my list of places to live. The wife (no pics) and I don't need a fancy metro-area lifestyle, but we do like having our amenities somewhat nearby, and my wife likes big, beautiful houses.

What guidance can anyone offer on quality of life overall?

I moved here from NYC.  I adjusted just fine.

The biggest drawback is no professional sports, if that's your thing.  If you like really big concert acts, those don;t come around either.

For shopping, you can hit up Omaha or the internet.

Big houses?  Your dollar goes pretty far around here compared to metro areas.

Biggest drawback?  It's hard to find good pizza.  OTOH, good steak is easy to get, beer is cheap at the bars, and there are good shooting opportunities.

We'll get major concerts every once in a while at CenturyLink Center, other than that strat has it right.  Kansas City isn't THAT far, everybody plays a show there.

Lincoln is starting to get some big name acts since they built the new arena.  Of course, they're mostly geezer rock.

High.  With a good possibility of seeing one or two per year.  I should know.  I live near York and have lived here for 8 years and have been within a half mile of a tornado twice now.  Thank god the house is still standing, but had to clean out my shorts twice.

The answers to all questions Husker are either:

1.  Bob Devaney
2.  Triple Option
3.  Tom Osborne

The taxes are too high, but at least the weather sucks. People are generally pretty nice.

Different job. NW Omaha. If an offer comes, it should be this week.

Suggestions?

Check out Gretna.

The growth rate tells me that a real estate investment now can have a nice pay off in 15-20 years when you retire.

Weather runs in extremes with two nice weeks in the fall and two more in the spring. All jokes aside, it's a very good state for overall lifestyle and very reasonable cost of living. Taxes, especially property, run kind of high but home prices are solid compared to the east coast (I'm from Lincoln, currently in Omaha, but I lived in New Jersey for a few years. The acceptance of firearms here is very good, especially since hunting is exceedingly popular and Trap/Skeet is still a sport offered at many high schools (I graduated in 1990 and remember the kids on trap team walking down the halls with their shotguns in soft cases slung over their shoulders on the way to their lockers in the mornings, wasn't considered safe to leave them in their cars!). Firearm restrictions are essentially limited to the federal laws: you can have full capacity mags, concealed carry allowed following the completion of a class, NFA items allowed with the usual Federal due process, etc. Oh, and 4 wheel drive is highly recommended.
