Hard cast, hands down. Buffalo Bore does some great stuff, just read their labels as some loads are safe in some guns and not in others. The Alaska Backpacker brand made in Wasilla is good too.

Buffalo bore and AK backpacker are HOT stuff, like 300 grains Hard cast lead gas checked, basically like shoving a broom stick through the bear. but realize unless you hit spine, brain or break a leg that bear isn't going to stop moving after you.

IIRC there was a guy in kenai that dropped a charging grizzly with a glock 19 and JHP ammo. His fishing buddy didn't load the 12 gauge and ran away.... apparently they aren't fishing buddies any more.

An Alaskan bear will swoop up the cookies and eat them on the way to playing with your corpse like its a Raggedy Ann doll.

Hard cast heavy lead bullets like Alaska Backpacker or Buffalo Bore are the choice for a handgun. A shotgun with Brenneke slugs is the BEST choice for a gun.

In any case, a big-ass can of bear spray used in conjunction with either is the ULTIMATE choice.

Glock 19 works great for shooting your buddy in the leg so you can escape

Brenneke slugs are the best choice for a SHOTGUN. Not the best choice overall. Fish and Wildlife troopers use 45 70's with hot hard cast loads by choice and they report having far better success with them than with shotguns.
That said a shotgun pump and especially a reliable semi auto can be fired faster than a lever gun. In the end its a personal choice. They are not easy animals to bring down and shot placement trumps caliber every time.

Apparently it works fine for stopping a bear charge if the shooter does his part at least it did in the above situation
