Does Iowa have any restriction over large rifle magazines?

I find this to be an appropriate response.

LOL! Add in that while you're in Iowa, if you have a carry permit that Iowa recognizes, you can keep that magazine loaded, and in the rifle, with a round chambered, and drive around with it uncased all fucking day in the passenger seat.

And as another reminder, Iowa recognizes all states permits.

If you don't have a carry permit you can still have the magazine loaded but not in the weapon.

And also note, the "carry permit that Iowa recognizes" is every state carry permit. Instead of "reciprocity agreements" we passed a "Universal Recognition" language back in the big 2011 reforms:
Iowa Code 724.11A
Recognition.
A valid permit or license issued by another state to any nonresident of this state shall be considered to be a valid permit or license to carry weapons issued pursuant to this chapter, except that such permit or license shall not be considered to be a substitute for an annual permit to acquire pistols or revolvers issued pursuant to section 724.15

Is that long guns only, or does it apply to handguns as well?

Both must be cased if you do not have a permit. They are treated the same. If you want the exact verbiage, read through Iowa Code 724

Just to clarify the loaded magazine must be a detached magazine and it applies to any detachable magazine. W/o a permit the weapon must be in a case and unloaded. The detachable magazine can be anywhere. With a permit any pistol, rifle or shotgun can be in the open and fully loaded if you desire. In fact, in Iowa, your permit is good for any weapon that is legal in Iowa. However, only firearms are covered under the preemption law where state law applies not local ordinances or resolutions.. For other weapons local ordinances can apply.
