OK, not my kid, but... a friend's 14 year old daughter won an essay contest at school in Columbus, OH.
Not sure how "big" the competition was, city-wide, state-wide, or what, but what she gets for winning is to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
I just thought that was absolutely and completely as cool as shit.
I really wish I could go out to see it.

I went once it was very moving, I want to go back again at some point. My wifes uncle is going out for an honor flight soon, I really wish my father in law would go for the experience

The changing if the guard is impressive. When i was there a visitor taking photos got a little too close and they warned him to back away.

I was fortunate to visit the Washington D.C. area with a local 4-H group, just before I graduated high school.  As a fairly large group, we got the VIP treatment wherever we went and we got to see everything that there was to see.  The entire trip was an adventure I'll never forget.

I was at the Tomb for President GW Bush presenting a wreath of remembrance. One of those most moving events in my life.

It is rightfully solemn at Arlington all the time, but literally a thousand people were nearly silent for an hour on that Veteran's Day. It is a great place for a mature 14yoa to visit and reflect upon what the Tomb signifies.

Claire is the young lady in the black and pink skirt.
A bit disappointed that she was not one that actually laid the wreath, but I still consider it a HUGE honor for her and am very proud of her.
Shared with permission of her father.

She is now in a somewhat exclusive club.  To be a part of the ceremony was an impressive privilege.
