Hi all,
My spouse is considering a Job within 15-20 minuets of Sioux Falls. From my limited research SD seems like a good 2nd Amendment place to live. Currently we own about 10 acres and keep poultry. From what I've seen, the real estate market is extremely limited for homes with acreage in the SF area. We're expecting twins next spring as well so a Hospital with excellent neonatal care is a must. I'll take a look at any moving to SD threads but feel free to share any insight you may have. Thanks! |
|
SF is the least interesting place that I have ever visited. I support 2A and expect that twins will erase any money and time for recreation for quite a while, but sometimes you need to get out. Real estate is quite reasonably priced though.
|
|
Lived in Sioux Falls all my life IM me with and specific questions you may have.
|
|
Thanks, right now, we're looking at the one house for sale in Larchwood IA, I have family in Iowa so getting an Iowa Buck tag would be nice.
We'll see how the whole process goes, We want to keep our house in the $250k or less range. We love post and beam construction with a nice rustic look but in that price range I haven't found anything close enough to Sioux Falls. I know we'll also be purchasing a new vehicle in the next 6 months so we can fit 3 car seats.... One thing I'll be checking out is Internet service, after 2 years with Satellite I'm getting internet without a data cap. There are a lot of parts in looking at this opportunity, this isn't the first opportunity to move and its not exactly what we want but I think its workable for our family. I know their are other potential opportunities definitely are better for us but we'll see what happens. Right now I'm just trying to get as educated on things as I can. /End unfiltered stream of thought |
|
One good Question though now that I'm done taking a though dump... any good local Breweries or Distilleries?
|
|
|
What I find surprising is how many houses show up on Realtor but not zillow I like some of the features of zillow. Anyway we're adding Harrisburg to the likely area, we're focusing efforts on South East of SF. How is that area specifically?

I use to do rock climbing although I'm getting too fat, so It would be great to start again, I don't do a lot of fishing except at the family farm... farm ponds are the way to go... love Pheasant hunting with our Chessie. I'm more the outdoor type than my wife but when I can get out I love it.

If you have or have any interest in NFA stuff stay out of Iowa. Iowa also has state income tax while South Dakota does not.
I grew up in Inwood, IA just 10 miles south of Larchwood and now live in Canton, SD about 30 miles southeast of Sioux Falls and just across the border from Iowa. $250k will get you a damn fine house in town, not so much an acreage. Lots of family land that doesn't come up for sale often and when it does it goes for big bucks. |

And recommend one of the smaller towns outside of SF, like Canton, Lennox, Dell Rapids, or Garretson. |

Silly to move to this area and live in Iowa. Resident hunting in SD is top notch.
|
|
Resident Hunting in Iowa is top notch when the family farm has a few hundred acres of CRP even if it is 6 hours away.
I'm not sure how taxes would work out, but I'm aware of NFA toys but I figure if live in Iowa it will save me a few thousand in NFA toys, with twins they're not in the future for a while anyway. |

Waterfowl. Big game. Predator. No comparison. And I'm from Iowa.

View Quote Black Hills Miner has a location in downtown Sioux Falls, they're in Prairie Berry East Bank. Gandy Dancer Brewery is in the back of Monks House of Ale Repute in DTSF, and WoodGrain Brewing Co is getting ready to open in a downtown location soon. Fernson Brewing Company is a new local brewery, currently on tap locally and should be sold in cans soon. |

Well, we're waiting to hear back, but it looks like we'll live in SD if we go forward. One major factor being just availability of housing. Still looking near Harrisburg, I'm guessing it will be a few years before I have any type of measurable social life and so I don't see having the free time to do in BG hunting without family in the area. Is their anywhere near SF with a 200+ yard range? It will be a while till I get into Larger rifle calibers but its on my wish list.

Coworker shot a 160 class deer off public last year. Big Sioux Rifle and Pistol club by Brandon has a 200yard range. We shoot at Benchresters by Tea. Get on the waiting list asap as it can take time. |

I am an NRA CRSO, R,P,S intructor. I've been using my certs to help out with Boys Scouts where we are now, so maybe if they need an RSO that will help but I haven't been doing a lot of classes. And need to up my BIT training in the next 6 months. I'd love to help out with classes but know I won't have the time to put them together, oh well. We'll see what happens, it seems like an offer might come shortly, I don't like to count chickens but I like to be ready to take care of them if they Hatch.

We have a 200 yard range in Canton, $50 a year for a family membership and you can come out any time. Wednesday night we have a steel plate shooting group that anyone is welcome to join.
https://www.facebook.com/SiouxRiverSportsmensClub I'm a new NRA RSO and instructor, working on getting some classes going so I may be able to use you in the future. |

Do you shoot USPSA? We shoot at Big Sioux. Always need more ROs around there.

I have shot USPSA, but not recently, one key is going to be to have my reloading setup in the house instead of the barn. 3 gun would be awesome. I definitely need to do more shooting as well as get the new enhanced CCP.

We have spriint now, we won't continue service with them. CS is worthless and they've allowed network upgrades interfear to much with service but with Satellite internet we wanted the unlimited data. They've just been a huge PITA.
Does anyone checking this thread live in Harrisburg? or have any insight into the community? It seems to be rapidly growing. |

Horrible coverage. I live in Tea. Both are bedroom communities with new schools. Lincoln County which is one of the fastest growing counties in the nation. That means they have money to maintain stuff. BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT SCHOOL DISTRICTS!!!!!! The boundaries are ten ways of fucked up. Be absolutely sure and double check before you buy. SD has great open enrollment laws, but it is a hassle. |
|
Not to stay away from, just to be sure you know which schools your kids will go to.
They are all good around here. Problem has to do with boundaries. I can see Tea from my front porch, but am in the Lennox school district which is 8 miles away. I have friends who can see Tea, but have to cross the interstate to Harrisburg schools. It's fucking stupid. All about tax base. If you look at a map of the districts around Sioux Falls you will honestly shake your head. Top notch community in every respect, but the outlying towns have made a mess of school boundaries. |
|
I can't say much about Harrisburg. It seems like a nice place, a few guys I work with live there and they like it. I did the garage sale day thing there this summer and will say that the street layout kinda sucks for a smallish community, the roads are curvy in a lot of places and there is not any resemblance to a grid system. Not that it's super terrible, just something I noticed when we covered the whole town looking for baby stuff that day.

I go into all the schools in the Southeast part of the state and the ones surrounding Sioux Falls are excellenct facilities. |

I had always intended on moving back after school and raising my kids there, but by the time I got married, it had already changed too much. It's basically little housing developments plopped down randomly on a map with nothing to provide any continuity or connection other than the fact that they are located in the Harrisburg city limits. I get the sense that it's going to get worse. |

Thanks for your time guys, the interview went well but the company couldn't even make an offer that matched what she made last year... so its disappointing. SD would have been nice but I think it would have been a dead end for her career. Thanks again.

View Quote Its getting better but we still are way Fernson just opened a taphouse on the north side of sioux falls. Good beer and taphouse looks nice Woodgrain downtown is nice and has decent taps as well as a good selection of regional beers mixed into theirs Gandydancer at Monks although I think they just sell through Monks which is a nice place Miners as part of Prairie Berry has good taps and flights but weird calm atmosphere. You can hear a pin drop most of the time and open until 8 or some other weird early time JL Beers has a few of their own and a good tap selection. New brewery going in by Century Theaters on Louise but its in a strip mall which isnt that appealing to me surrounded by parking lot The District has a good tap selection and good food Taphouse 41 is a nice combo of good rotating taps and whiskey/burger bar. Ive killed many a whiskey there and Scheels is next doors if you want to wander in and make bad decisions after(last time I bought a Benelli M4 while buzzed up). Granite City is more of a restaurant but they finish beer there. Pretty decent and big mugs If you need drinking guide just yell. Its no NE Minneapolis but its getting better Edit - Nevermind see your arent moving. Just a FYI if anybody else is beer scouting then I guess |
