We have rented a cabin on a lake Toivola/ Twin Lakes area.

We arrived Saturday, leaving Saturday. It's nice up here...found a quick internet connection.

Pasties are a no go. The lard in the dough makes me ill

I scored some Black Rocks Coconut Brown and their Stout/ Porter. The Atwater is SO cheap up here compared to where I live...go figure. $10.49/ 6 pack back home. $7.99 here. Wayne county, FTW? We had lunch in Hougton (going back to Copper Harbor sometime this week), loaded up on 'needs' in Wal Mart, scored some 22LR for $7.95 bx

I have been running the dirt roads every morning, nice and hilly, guys with pick ups don't like sharing the roads up here...with anyone Pics when I get back/ more stable connection.

Give me some idea's what to do with and two of my 4 kids are here.

Copper Harbor  / Brockway Mountain Drive is definitely worth the trip.  If it is available there, the Ore Dock also makes a good brew.

Uncle ducky's pictured rocks tours in Munising. It would be a bit of a drive but everything in da UP is far away.

We went in June. It was warm during the day but colder at night. Superior stays cold year round!

There are several mine tours in the area that are worth the trip to see. Adventure Mine, in Greenland (20 minutes south of Twin Lakes), the Quincy mine in Hancock, and the Delaware Mine (Mohawk). Bring a sweatshirt or jacket, the mines are usually in the 40s all year round.

Michigan Tech has a mineral museum as well, and is worth a stop.

You can go agate hunting on many of the beaches around the area. the tours on the Queen from Copper Harbor are worthwhile. You can also rent kayaks and canoes and tour the rivers, lakes, and streams.

The ATV trails are in good shape and many shops rent them.

I'll second the trip to Pictured Rocks. They have kayak tours available that take you out into the caves and up against the cliffs.

If you are interested in restaurants, I'll list the ones I go to-

The Hut (Kearsarge)
Carmelita's (Calumet) (Serves great breakfast)
Racer's Burgers (Hancock)
Quincy's (Dollar Bay)
The Fitzgerald (Eagle River) (great BBQ and drinks)
The Loading Zone 2 (Lake Linden)
Krupp's Mini Mart (Twin Lakes)

If you are looking for anything specific, let me know and I can tell you what is around the area.

OPSEC..but I am in and out of Krupps mini mart 2 times a day so far. Staying about 400 yards away in a cabin on the water that hasn't been updated since 1983..

Gonna go up to Houghton again in a day or two...we blew Calumet as we ate in Copper Harbor at a hotel on the water.

Ive been running 1-2 hours a day up here..nice.

Just a side note, I grew up in the area.  My grandma had a house in Toivola.

We used to camp and fish Twin Lakes.

You got Copper Harbor, Brockway Mountain, the Canal cruises that leave Houghton are nice for a night.  There's a casino at Bruce's Crossing if you're into that.

There's the copper mine in Hancock.

You could visit my Dad and sister in Chassell.

BTW, we don't like you trolls coming up there and hogging the roads.

My wife's mother is from the area here, Taipola. They then moved to Lake Roland and owned a nice home here on the water. When my MIL's parent's died they left the kids the house. My MIL's sister got married and the guy brought all kinds of spiteful drama into the family. My MIL sold her share of the house...my wife wanted to bring the kids up here to see how my wife spent her summers on Lake Roland and the area..its been quite nice. my MIL has a brother up here who lives in assisted care, he subsidies won't be allowed or honored down state (doesn't see to make sense, but ok)..

We ate at Ambassador yesterday, went bowling..caught a big bass off the dock between all the blue gill and perch..no rain today, gonna golf and enjoy the last day or two up here. Houghton/ Hancock is officially out of .22lr

It was pouring when we passed the Chassell sign on our way back, was gonna take a selfie in front of the sign..

When I was running, I saw one or two keg's on a zip line...heard it's for firemen competitions, they try and push the keg to the other side with dueling hoses...weird.

Any idea what the small white signs are for all over the area, they have a green shield with a number in them. Logging rights? It's the best guess I could come up with.

ETA:

One last question, I notice stuff when I run ..every couple of hundred feet down certain roads it looks like they planted small skinny tree's with red and white tabs on them about 2' off the road's edge...the tabs were prolly 2" inch squares and were about 1' apart from each other..I ran Pike Lake road..only on the hard ball did they have them, not the dirt portion. What are those for? Snowmobile stuff?

Home now. We left at 930a and made it home with a few stops for gas, dog and lunch at 630p.

Easy drive.

In the eastern end of the UP the country road commission sticks 1" or so saplings every couple hundred feet just off the shoulder to help guide the snowplows.
Occasionally they have flagging near a bridge or culvert or similar hazard but most are plain.

If you ever get the chance to go in winter do it! Go out on Lake Superior and experience ar15 heaven. There are millions of ice targets to shoot and nobody is around to complain about the noise.

I hate everything winter, the last thing I will ever do is go north during the winter for 'fun'.

Sounds intriguing and terribly dangerous. Please provide more details on backstop etc. it sounds like a good idea on the sled.

Backstop is 100+ miles of wide open and deserted Lake Superior. Only shoot in uninhabited places with no houses around. In winter there are no people around. Maybe a few coyotes.
