Well, I applied for and accepted a job with my company in Memphis, , since my current location is closing next year thanks to the War on Coal.   I don't want to live in Mogadishu by the Mississippi and was thinking about renting a 1BR apartment either in South Haven, Collierville or West Fayette Co.  I just need a safe place to crash while I'm on shift, when I'm off shift I'll go to my home about 80 miles away.  I not worried about partying, bars, night scene and all that juvenile crap.

Any ideas or suggestions from those who live or work in Shelby County?

Thanks

Edit: I would be open to buying a 2-3 BR house in those locations too if the price and neighborhood are right.

Definitely rent first and get a feel for where you want to live depending on your work location.  What part of town are you going to be working?

MS or Mid Island then.

I would definitely recommend looking at an apt on Mud Island.  Lots of restaurant choices down there and plenty of places to safely stretch your legs.  When you look to buy a house, then you are definitely going to want to look south to MS or maybe AR (I would wait until the I-55 bridge work is completed.)

I'm in Hernando MS just across the state line.  You may want to see about renting here.
Our schools are some of the best in the state, and your drive sounds like it would be short.

Have considered that, don't need to worry about schools the kids are grown.

Gotcha.  I don't have kids, but enjoy being able to sleep with the windows up during the spring and fall.

Don't be afraid to look across the river in Marion, AR either.

Mississippi has a state income tax. I'm guessing you have a home in Tennessee. You need to find out how much if any you will have to pay.

I'm looking at some houses in the Millington area today after work, I was stationed there at the former NAS Memphis as an Instructor from 91-94 so I'm familiar with the area.  That would put me at about the same commute distance as I had at my last job but not as bad as my Quantico to DC commute was.

I imagine someone more local may chime in, but the drive between Memphis and Millington (on Danny Thomas/51) used to be pretty sketchy if that would be your normal commute.

Considering I have to be at work at either 0600 or 1800 I'll miss most commuters.  Like I said it can't be as bad as the I-95 commute from Quantico to DC, I-95/I-495 Richmond to DC "I HATE the Wait".

Now here's an interesting bit of information, the house in Atoka that my wife & I had built in 91 and sold in 94 when we transferred to Beaufort SC is for sale.  I'm going to look at it Thursday and I haven't told the agent I was the original owner.  If I can get it for the right price I may just buy it, I drew up the plans and supervised its construction so I know what I'd be getting.

I moved from Memphis to Fairfax, VA in 1990. I know the I95 Fredericksburg to the beltway nightmares.

Went to Memphis State in the late 80s. Had my car broken into 3 times.

I hear Memphis has really gone downhill since then.

Same price as it sold for in 94?

No, sold for $67.5k in 94 current asking price $119k, unfortunaltly it went under contract before I got a chance to look at it.

While waiting for the house to close (insert continuous loop of Jeopardy) I'm discovering I hate hotels, don't care if it's the Days Inn or the Residence Inn they all suck after awhile, at least I'm only working four 10's and I go home on the weekends. I should stop belly aching and count my blessings that I'm still employed.

I've also noticed that some hotels in the Memphis/Southaven area do not have FNC, now how's a right winger gun nut supposed to get his propaganda for the day?

Moved into the cube farm, got a second security access badge and parking at work today, getting anchored to "901" a little more each day.  My hat's off to the rent-a-cop my company had on entry post today, wouldn't let me in without escort or proper access credentials.  I wouldn't expect less of him after I found out he's a fellow Marine and he had a M&P 40 on his hip as a deterrent too.

Feeding more paperwork to mortgage company now with a closing date.  The saga continues.........................

Hank, if you want I'll come over and clean some guns to avoid hotel boredom.

This! Central BBQ on Summer has a big main room or the "bar" side, served with good brews.

Don't get Jerky Boy or HermanSnerd or Inzane or Pappy or Lil Bastard involved. They just bring goats and handshakes.
