I am heading to the coast later this month. A friend is letting my family use his house @ Arch Cape. My dad lives in Warrenton. He gave me all of his firearms after his stroke, but his recovery has been amazing, and he used to LOVE to shoot. I'd like to take him out and plink a bit, and possibly destroy some clays (I have a thrower).

Any thoughts where to go? I'm happy to pay for a range/private land, or find a spot in the hills.

Ideally, we'd be somewhere between Cannon Beach and Astoria, but could go east a bit if needed.

Most likely youll just have to find a logging road in that area. I cant think of a specific spot that id be able to give directions to.

I've found in the area between Lincoln City and Tillamook there are a lot of places along forest service roads where a side road has been bladed closed by a bulldozer.  These can often make excellent lanes for shooting.  Most of the places I know are around the Neskowin area.

Thanks - we found a good spot up an old road a bit south-east of Astoria. His neighbor was happy to take us to his favorite spot. He brought along a couple of his toys. He and my dad have chatted, but never in depth. I think a couple of old men have just made new friends.

From the thread below...we shot the A5 at clays, and the Mauser at stationary targets. We had about 200 yards open, and the Mauser seemed like it was just getting warmed up! Unfortunately, ammunition for the Mauser is really hard to find (8x60S) and I don't yet reload, so we limited ourselves to just a few shots. I'll bet the Mauser hasn't been shot in decades.

Also shot my favorite Benelli 12Ga at some more clays, and a couple of handguns, just for fun.

Dad's neighbor has a really cool Dan Wesson .357MAG with a 10" barrel. That thing was fantastic.

Drive up the kilches (sp?) river. there are lots of clear cuts up there that make great shooting spots!
