Picked up an unfired Steyr SSG69 PII a while back. Didn't need another long barrel .308 precision rifle, but I couldn't pass on the price, which included 2 mags.

Decided to have it cut down to 16.5" and threaded for a Silencerco flash suppressor/can attachment. Use it as a truck/knockaround/suppressor host, and a demo rifle for my Guerilla Sniper courses. That's when my plan derailed......

Cutting an SSG69 down turned out to be a huge PITA. Because it's press-fit, the barrel can't be pulled for cutting/threading. The action is tapered at the rear, with a rear lug, which makes grabbing it in a chuck problematic. Not that it can't be done, but the amount of set up and work involved makes it cost prohibitive. Like 4-5hrs of work.

I've got a good buddy who is a Master Tool and Die Maker.....a real genius. He took the project on for a free dinnner and later regretted it. But, the barrel has been cut and threaded.

Got a factory Picatinny rail, a padded cheekpiece, and did some mods to the forend sling setup to enable me to left-side mount the sling. Turned out great.

It's at Dobbs Defense now. Dark OD green on barreled action/rail, Sniper gray on stock, black on bolt handle/shroud.

I've got a Nightforce ATACR 4-16x42mm F1 en route to sit atop her.

I'll post pics when I get her back from Frank at Dobbs Defense.

Sounds cool. Looking forward to pics. Not sure if I've seen one of those in the wild or not.

They've been around a long while.  Hit the market in 1969, they ceased production last year.

They're retro-cool, always liked them.   They're different; rear-locking lugs, rear-lugged action, press-fit barrel, rotary magazine, rotary hammer forged barrel with the spiral hammer marks left in the steel.

I have always liked those SSG69's Shep. They have the forward set trigger, right?

Some do, and any can be upgraded with the set trigger.   Mine doesn't have it.

Got to the range today.  Shoots sub-MOA with SSA 175grn, which was the only load I tried in it.  I have quite a supply of FGMM 175grn and M118LR, and both shoot better than the SSA in all my other rifles, but sub-MOA is more than good enough for what I'm gonna use this rifle for.  I've got several cases of the SSA, picked it up a while back for $.80/round, so I'll use it for the Steyr.

Here's a group with the Silencerco Omega installed.  Top round was fired, then an elevation adjustment made, then a 5-shot group.

Very nice looking rifle. Not exactly what a mere mortal such as myself could call a "truck gun/beater rifle". Lol

I'll run it out to at least 600yds this weekend.

Nice!  Can't wait to see it.

I've started another myself.   I picked up one of the AAC/Remington Model 7 .300Blk actions a few years ago.  AAC was running a sale on the light contour threaded barrels last week so I grabbed one of those. I'm thinking of getting an XLR Chassis for it, and I've got a Nightforce 2.5-10x24mm at home that's never been out of the box.

What ever happened to your MVP project?  I can't find the thread and I'm curious how it ended up.

It's a work in progress.  Got 3 going on right now:  BHP, S&W 457, Remington Model Seven .300Blk in an MDT folding chassis.
