We are going to Newnan for X-mas this year. My dad just bought his first AR (a Colt 6920) and wants me to bring some stuff home to shoot with the family. I am at least bringing my Mk12, maybe some of my long range stuff to let the family shoot outside of their box.
I haven't lived in the area since '96, and need a "public" range (I will pay a fee to shoot) and have no idea where I can shoot past 100 yards. I would prefer at least 300 yds, 600+ would be ideal. Anyone have any ideas? Anything close to Newnan?

Honestly, there isnt anything here like that. You have Gun Site in Lexington GA but its a pain to shoot up there and thats it. Everywhere that has longer distances are for matches only or are private clubs.

Centerfire Precision in Woodbury has 300 yards and is open to the public.

There are several places I can think of that have ranges of 300 yards or more. And a couple club and private ranges that are 300 yards or more. None that I know of are near Newnan.

Well crap. I forget that everywhere doesn't have a 1k yard range behind everyone's back deck.
Thanks everyone. I think I will just find a local range and let him burn some ammo, and leave the boomers at home.... Just bring the Mk12.

I called and left a message with Centerfire Precision, and am waiting to hear back.
Anyone shot there? Any rules I need to know about? I am bringing handloads, leaving the big boomers at home, but will bring my Mk12 and 308 AR.

Talked to the owner, seems like a good guy. Range fees are $20 per person per day.
Here we go!

It's been three years though Hahahah! Yeah, he called me earlier, and we chewed the fat for a while. He seemed pretty laid back, and asked me how I heard about his range. I name dropped Arfcom (lol), and he said he had hosted a shoot before.

Did I mention I have always wanted to go on an elk hunt? No really I have.... funny hoe that works out. Are you interested in a paid guided hunt? |
|
[#19]
Elk and moose. Always wanted to hunt both.
Family in Sweden and been trying for 10 years to get approval to hunt moose there. Don't even know where to start for an elk hunt! |
|
[#20]
Sorry guys, we aren't taking any new hunters on the ranch for a while (pretty long waiting list).
If you guys wanna do a little public land hunting, I would be more than glad to take you around and help you out figuring out the licensing, rules, areas, etc. I don't formally guide anymore (I let my guide license expire, so I don't do it for money anymore, even on the ranch). Speed goats are a good way to break into western hunting. You always see game, it's the cheapest tags, and it's mostly driving around glassing looking for a good antelope, then stalking. |
|
[#21]
Got any good links on where to start for public land? Looks to be about $7500 for a commercial guide.
|
|
[#22]
Of course I do.
$7500 is probably a horseback wilderness hunt (I would assume at that price). We don't charge that much for elk because it is not a horseback wilderness hunt. We charge $2500 per gun for Muleys, which is about the going rate in Wyoming, unless you run into those outfits that charge according to antler size after the shot (high fence game farms are illegal in Wyoming, so the closest to a guaranteed animal you will get are ranches that hay the elk, and set out alfalfa for deer during the winter). Go to the game and fish website, and start reading the laws, and pm me when you start having questions, where to hunt, etc. Remember, out of staters cannot legally hunt wilderness areas without a resident "guide". |

Seems like you have your range time figured out, what dates you gonna be here and we'll see if you can get you to sit in a Georgia lodge. Most lodges don't have a second communication in December but I'll check if you have time and are interested.
You can IM me if you want.

The AR Bunker has a new range out to 550 yards that is in Turin (15 minutes from Newnan). Currently open on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. I have not been there yet, but a buddy said that it is nice. The AR Bunker's showroom is one mile north of Hooters.

The AR Bunker does have a nice range called Keg Creek. The county admin just sent them a Cease and disist order. Check out the Keg creek range facebook page. This really sucks for those guys after they spent thousands of dollars building a nice place to shoot.
