So far I have been using the simple foamies as my hearing protection which has worked just fine.  But its looking like I am going to be doing some instruction and also will be trying to get into some classes as well at the range so I think it is time to break down and get some electronic hearing protection.  I am wondering what everybody else is using and how they like them.  For now it will mainly be pistol and m4 work.  Thank you everyone for the help.

I use pro-ears and then I had custom molded made by a hearing aid specialist and I have the injected molds made by a local company .... All have a purpose for me ... Pistol, rifle, long range, competition etc

You have to figure out what level (decibels) of hear pro you need and if you like innies or outies and electronic or not

Can't go wrong with the howard leights, on amazon for around $40. Except that almost everyone owns one now, so be sure to distinctly mark yours somehow. Electronic ear pro is a must for instruction and classes trying to hear commands.

I use the  Impact Sport and you can hear the commands perfectly. Good price and good performance.

+1 (Amazon also sells them if you're Prime and don't want to pay shipping, but Primary Arms is awesome too, so buy them there if you can.)

I don't recommend the Caldwell ones. They are too boxy and mess-up my cheek weld with shooting a rifle.

Costco had some last year that were $40 or so. They operated like the high dollar ones that adjust the noise level rather than just cutting out every shot. The ones that cut out for every shot get annoying if you are trying to talk at a busy range.

They are walkers game ear brand.

How are the Howard Leights for blocking the sound of the shot?  Can you get by with a day on the range with just them or should I be looking for something to go under them to kill the initial sound of the shot?  I am between them and the Peltor Tactical 6S.

Foamies are usually rated higher than electronic, 30 vs 24 decibels IIRC.  Personally I double up ear pro, especially at indoor ranges

Thats why I have been happy with my foamies but I will need to be able to hear what is going on better is why I am looking at electronic hear pro now.  I am thinking maybe a set of the surefire sonic defenders under them.

The Impact Sport's are rated at NRR22, they automatically shuts off loud impulse noise to a safe 82dB while amplifying conversation and range commands IE they protect your hearing but amplify surrounding sound like commands if you need them to be. I keep mine turned up volume wise just enough to hear commands clearly. Most ROs and Instructors are yelling anyway because they have ear protection on also and forget how loud they are speaking. One thing I do like about them is that they do not completely block out a firearm discharge completely. I believe this is safer and more realistic because it allows you to properly react to gun fire and know what is going on around you. But you must properly fit them so they have a good seal. If they rise up due to your cheek weld with the firearm stock, I suggest using a foamy on that side under the ear muff.

We were in a field and I had my volume up a little to loud and kept thinking I was about to be stung by a bumble bee. When the string of fire ended, I lifted one ear cup to get a better direction on the close by bee and realized it was 25 yards away when I finally spotted it. I now put them on before we get started, and have somebody talk to me that is not wearing hearing protect and adjust my volume to that, then back it off slightly and its prefect for the day.

I grabbed a pair of the Howard Leight Impact sports.  They are on sale at Cabelas for $49.99.  You need to tell them as its an online price and they don't have it marked in the stores.  Hopefully I will get out and see how they are this week and see if I need to order a set of sure fires to go under them or not.  Thanks everyone for the help.
