Hey Guys,

Just a H/U on a issue that's made better progress than I've expected. Posted below from an email I've received from Grass roots NC.

Today’s Good News
It’s exciting to report that HB 746 (Constitutional Carry and more), has successfully passed two of three necessary floor votes in the NC House, and is positioned to head to the Senate after tomorrow’s (Thursday’s) third vote.

Today’s Heroes
Big ‘thank yous’ to Rep. Chris Millis for his heroic defense of the bill along with passionate bill support from Rep. Larry Pittman and Rep. Michael Speciale. Majority Leader John Bell and Rep. Justin Burr were also instrumental in the avoidance of a long list of anti-gun amendments put forth by the usual anti-gun Democrats.

Today’s Disappointments
On the whole, today was a good day for gun rights. But regrettably, eight House Republicans voted against your right to keep and bear arms. These Republicans decided that the people are not in charge of administering their own civil rights. Instead, they’ve determined that only “important” government officials, and politically affected sheriffs should make these choices for you. Talk about “elitists!” Whatever canned responses they issue to cover this misdeed, in the end there is no hiding the facts . . .

The “Elitist Eight” Voted:

Against the right of law-abiding adults to carry concealed without a permission slip from the state.
   Against their own party’s pro-gun, pro-Constitutional Carry platform (p. 12).
Against those who voted for them for the express purpose of restoring Second Amendment rights, and hearing campaign promises to that very tune.
   With Michael Bloomberg’s well-paid, anti-gun lobbyists.
   With the anti-gun Democrats

So who are the Elitist Eight who voted against your gun rights?
Listed below are the eight Republicans who voted with the Democrats and with Michael Bloomberg’s supporters. For the most part, their GRNC ratings paint a pretty clear picture of where they really stand on gun rights, regardless of campaign rhetoric (0 to 4 stars).

Rep. Ted Davis (*) – New Hanover County
Rep. John Faircloth (**) – Guilford County
Rep. John Fraley (**) – Iredell County
Rep. D. Craig Horn (*) – Union County
Rep. Frank Iler (***) – Brunswick County
Rep. Chuck McGrady (*) – Henderson County
Rep. Samuel Watford (0) – Davidson County
Rep. Linda Williams (****) – Wake County

Please Call Your Rep Tonight or Early Tomorrow

Since the objection of Pricey Harrison forced the third vote to be postponed until Thursday, it is still possible for weakening amendments to be added to the bill. For this reason, it’s important that you call your representative and let him or her know that you expect a “no” vote on any weakening amendments. Below, under “Immediate Action Required” see how you can easily locate your representative’s contact information.

Also below, see how you can easily send a note to the “Elitist Eight” so they know you are aware of their misdeed. They must be made to understand that there will be political consequences for voting against gun rights. Surely, they can redeem themselves by voting for this bill in order to override a potential governor’s veto. So, there is hope for them yet.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED!

"Your Anti-Gun Votes: Whose side are you on?"

Dear Representative:

I’ve just learned that you voted against the constitutional carry bill, HB 746, on Wednesday. This is a huge disappointment to say the least.

I can’t help but wonder why you would vote against a bill that addresses an issue that is explicitly supported in the 2016 Republican Party Platform. Indeed, the platform not only supports Second Amendment rights in general, but specifically highlights your party’s hearty support for constitutional carry (see p. 12). What is even more perplexing is the fact that, after all the campaign rhetoric supporting gun rights, you voted today with the anti-gun representatives in the opposition party. And worse, you voted as those who support gun control and work for anti-gun, New York billionaire, Michael Bloomberg, would have you vote. It does lead me to question, whose side are you on?

Perhaps if you were to reconsider your position, an untenable position for an ostensibly pro-Second Amendment Republican, you may be able to restore a pro-gun reputation. Should HB 746 reach the governor’s desk, there is a chance he will veto it. As you know, your party has a veto-proof majority in the General Assembly, and with your vote, gun rights supporters can override the governor’s veto, and continue the effort to restore long-eroding gun rights for North Carolina citizens. I must admonish you to vote for this bill after its third reading on Thursday, and more importantly, should it be necessary, vote ‘Yes’ on this bill to override governor Cooper’s veto.

I will be paying close attention to your actions on this matter through Grass Roots North Carolina alerts.

Respectfully,

Please voice/email your support if you choose to.

So the question I have is if this can override Gov's veto without those additional Republican votes?

I don't know that Cooper is against it.  A veto comes back to haunt a politician.  The ONLY reason Cooper got in was because of the HB2 backlash.

So what are the chances this will make it pass the Senate and the Governor?

According to GRNC, our Republican Senators are dragging their feet on this bill and it may be dead if they don't act fast.

We can press the Sheriffs at election time and campaign against bad apples.  Do we?

You might want to contact your senators now.  It's in caucus and they're waffling on gun rights.

Generally sitting Sheriffs get re-elected unless they mess up big time. Even then - who knows? Do
not underestimate the political clout they have.

It seems that the GOP in this state is as bad as it is in Florida.  Screwing gunowners.
