My wife and I are taking the camper from western NC to stay at Hatteras in mid March.  What are some things to do besides the dunes everyone likes to slide down. kittyhawk, the lighthouse and such?  Good restaurants, nice parks to see?

Thanks

Mark

Mark, make sure and do breakfast at Stack' Em High, terrific place. Also visit Jenette's Pier it's a must see. And the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum has  great displays including some pretty neat antique scuba gear and fishing gear.

Sam and Omies in Nags Head for breakfast
Kelly's in Kitty Hawk for dinner

Both are a drive from Cape Hatteras but if you are going to be at Jockey's ridge for a day, they are two good places to hit.

Should be a lot of waterfowl (ducks, geese, swans) on Pea Island if you want to do a little bird watching.

If you are into shopping any, the Christmas Shop in Manteo is an interesting place to browse.

If you make down to Ocracoke Island checkout Howard's Pub. Also, the British cemetery in Ocracoke Village and the lighthouse.

Wright brother memorial is pretty cool to see if you're going to be in the area anyways and are in to aviation history. Great fishing around the whole area too if your into fishing.

Black Pelican and Lone Cedar are good restaurants. Tortugas Lie is a good burger and beer place but great food as well.

The aquarium has been also improved and is worth the stop or a great place if weather turns. Wanchese Seafood and boat builders are on the south side of Roanoke Island.

A lot of birds on Lake Mattamuskeet if youre into that too.

Enjoy the trip.

I agree with knowledgegreen, got to drop in at Howards Pub.  While there you can also rent a golf cart and tour the island.

make sure if you want to drive on the beach, you have and actual 4x4 .  went to obx for thanksgiving with family and did some surf fishing in buxton,   while driving to the point, on the beach the car in front of us( we were in a honda passport with 4x4)  was a couple from new york in a awd nissan juke.  they made about 300 yards on to the dunes before they got stuck.  we passed them, telling them we would see if anyone had tow cables to help them pull out.  we asked and didn't find anyone,  we fished for about and hour before we went back, they were still stuck in the sand and were now blocking  other trucks from getting on and off the beach.  they had four guys pushing and and truck pulling, until they finally got far enough to unblock themselves from the beach traffic. we passed them and were cleaning our fish at the cleaning station when they finally drove past after getting themselves off the beach. the lady friend was letting the boyfriend have it yelling at him and frantic arm waving as they slowly drove past.

Rodanthe fishing pier.  Catch spots, blues all kinds of stuff.  Buddy hooked a manta ray the size of a Volkswagen there!

It did get some damage last year, so not sure what is left.

Suggest you check the NC 12 road conditions before you head from Nags Head to Hatteras. May be overwash at times if ocean is rough, and there was a detour onto the beach due to construction recently---not sure if that is still being done. Check Dare County's website for links to info..
Good restaurants have been named previously. Owens and Lone Cedar in Nags Head near the Whalebone Junction are good.
Note that some places are closed for winter.  The short ferry ride from Hatteras Village to Ocracoke is a good thing to do, and there are several restaurants on the island.
If you are taking US 64, the wildlife refuges on the way may interest you.  There are alligators in the waters in that area.

Glad you mentioned that, I didn't realize there is basically one way in and out.  Fortunately the road work was 7am to 7pm today, and the detour went on the beach.  I don't know how well that would work pulling a camper.

Another vote for the Black Pelican, damn tasty.

Also, take your time getting there, the troopers out that way are.........enthusiastic about their work.

I have been renting a ocean front home near milepost 21, south Nags Head for the past 25 years. All of the fine dining establishments mentioned above are spot on. Highly recommended. Another couple of eateries are Queen Anne's Revenge and the Weeping Radish in  Manteo.
