I hate downtown and try to avoid it at all costs, so I'm no help there...

How about Chesterfield Valley right off 40, not real far from downtown??? If so, try Stoney River or Annie Guns...

Neither are cheap, but I been to both and to many restaurants that cost much more and I'll go back to Stoney River or Annie Gunns everytime...

Best food and service I've had and my guests always rave afterwards...

First post nails it.

Chesterfield Valley hands down.  TONS of options

Don't any of you recommend that crap on "the hill".  30 years ago yes that was good food but not now.  Unless you consider Olive Garden level food italian.  ;)  I cringe when people recommend for STL visitors to go to the hill and get some EYE-tallion and some "t-ravs."

ps, Ted Drews sucks.

What kind of food are you looking for ?  If you are close to downtown, I wouldn't drive all the way to the Valley for some food.

Citizen Kane's in Kirkwood is pretty good. I'd give it 4/5 stars.

Tucker's is decent too. However, it's not really a Valentines Day worthy environment.

This.  NOT the fanciest, but by far one of the best steaks I've had in my AO

The Charcoal House in on Manchester in Rock Hill is pretty good if you like an old school steak house.

Downtown:  Al's.  Hands down my favorite place and I've been to a lot of fancy places all over the country and in Europe.  It's been there for 90 yrs and has never had a printed menu.  Hasn't changed one bit in the last 40 yrs (including some of the staff).  Get Harold to tell you the story about when Sinatra came in.  Only thing I don't like is that it's downtown.....but it's right next to the casino and you valet park.

Kreis's in Ladue is good, as Citizen Kane's in Kirkwood and Sam's near Grant's Farm.  But if your lady isn't into steaks, Spiro's is a great greek place.....great ambiance and it's in Chesterfield.  In the Valley go to Annie Gunn's--everything else is franchise stuff (Farato's closed last month.)  Go up to Clarkson and hit Ya Ya's.......that's one of my favorites.

I disagree on the ripping on the Hill, plenty of good food but I only go there for lunch any more.  Bartalino's used to be my favorite before they moved and became a hotel restaurant.  But yes, Ted Drew's is gross.

I've been there before. Kinda pricey. Fun atmosphere with the service staff finishing plates table side. Get the strip steak with foie gras
