A new law doing away with fees for concealed carry permits for retired military personnel has earned Alabama the praise of the National Rifle Association.
The measure, introduced by Rep. David Standridge, R-Hayden, and signed into law last week by Gov. Robert Bentley, voids the charge for concealed weapon licenses for military veterans. That fee varies from $5 to $25 a year based on county.
The law covers non-disability military retirees. Applicants will have to provide proof of retirement before being issued a license from their sheriff in the county in which they reside. The law covers retirees from active duty Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force or Coast Guard as well as reserve and National Guard personnel.
The law garnered praise from the NRA.
