Never thought I would ever say this but I am truly glad my son developed social anxiety. It was an act of God that he was no longer around these kids.

UPDATE: During a media briefing Sunday, officials said three teens and one adult have been charged following a crime spree in Decatur.

According to police, the following have been charged:

  • 16-year-old Cortez Mitchell: Four Counts of Robbery, One Count of Murder ($300,00 Total Bond)

  • 16-year-old Cedric Cowan: Four Counts of Robbery, One Count of Murder ($300,00 Total Bond)

  • 17-year-old Amani Juan Goodwin: Four Counts of Robbery, One County of Murder ($300,00 Total Bond)

  • 20-year-old Joseph Christopher Cowan: One Count of Capital Murder (No Bond)

Where's the story?  4 Points Mentioned

Official say the teens will be charged as adults.

Those murder charges are in connection to the
death of Antonio Hernandez. Officers found Hernandez shot to death at a
home on Albert Street in Decatur.

As for the four counts of robbery each teen
faces, two are related to Albert Street, one from a robbery at Julian
Harris Elementary School, and one from a robbery on 8th Avenue Southwest.

Decatur police say the outbreak of violence is the worst they have seen in a long time.

"It's beyond anything our community has experienced in such a short period of time," Chief Ed Taylor said in a news conference.

Right now, officers believe the group chose victims at random, and called the cases crimes of opportunity.

"We have not found any reason, any animosity, or
bad blood between any of the victims, including those who had their
homes shot into. They seem to just be going around thinking that they
are having a good time," Capt. Nadis Carlisle told media about the
suspects.

-----------------------

The Decatur Police department is piecing together a series of dangerous and deadly crimes throughout the community overnight Friday into Saturday.

ROBBERIES:

There were several business robberies:

  • The Payless convenience store at 2719 Spring Ave. SW was robbed twice, once at 10:42pm and a second time at 4:50am.

  • The Raceway convenience store located at 2331 Hwy 20E was robbed at approximately 3:40am.

  • The Jet-Pep convenience store located at 106 6th Ave. NE was robbed at approximately 9:30am.

  • At
9:31am, The clerk at the PetroSouth convenience store, located at 106
6th Ave NE reported a robbery by a white male who brandished a knife.

Decatur
police say a suspect, 51 year old  John Andrew Kister, was arrested in
connection with these cases by the Anti-Crime Unit. He's being charged
with four counts of Robbery in the First Degree. He's in the
Decatur Jail, according to police. No bond has been set.

Sgt George Silvestri has so far charged Kister with (1) count of First Degree Robbery,

for the robbery that occurred at the PetroSouth.

THE CRIMES CONTINUE:

That wasn't the end of the dangerous night.
Things were about to get deadly and the suspects in these cases are
still on the loose.

  • Just after 9:00pm, the Decatur Police
Department were called to reports of shot fired into a home in the 600
block of 5th Ave. SW. No injuries. Witnesses told police the shots
reportedly came from a silver Nissan Altima.

  • Just
before 10:00pm, more reports of shorts fire. Officers responded to the
100 block of Albert St. The body of a man was found in the carport with
what appeared to be multiple bullet wounds, according to Decatur
police. The victim's ID is being held pending notification of
    next-of-kin.

  • Around 11:30pm, a woman called police in the 1600
block of 8th Ave. SW. A woman said two men dressed in all black got out
of a Nissan Altima and threated to shoot her in front of her 5 year old
daughter. Police say the woman reported the men were carrying a long
black gun. The victim handed over her purse and the suspects ran,
according to the police. Neither the woman or her daughter was hurt.

  • Around
12:30am, officers reported to shots first in the 400 block of 5th Ave.
SW. A woman told police she hid in the bathroom after hearing gunshots
and called police. Police say several bullet holes were found in the
side of her home. Witnesses say they saw a Nissan Altima speeding away
from the home shortly after. The woman was not hurt.

  • At 1:15am, a
man came to the Decatur Police Department and said he had been robbed
at the intersection of 11th Avenue and 2nd St. NW. The man told police
he ran from the suspects, dressed in all black, and heard one of them
yelling "Shoot Him." That victim was not injured.

  • Around 9:00am
Saturday morning, a passer-by found the body of a man in the pavilion in
Wilson Morgan park near Adventureland. Police say he was shot once in
the head. They believe this could be connected to the other crimes in
    the past 12 hours.

Police need help to find out who the suspects are
in the older model bronze or silver Nissan Altima with a dark colored
bumper. Suspect descriptions are very vague and it is the WAAY 31 policy
to only give descriptions that can help identify the suspects and
aren't summarizing a large group of people. Police do know the group was
wearing all black during each reported incident where a description was
given.

If you have any information in this violent and dangerous crime spree, contact Decatur Police at 256-476-7638. A $1,000.00 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the criminals.

Decatur Police said in a news release, "All Decatur
residents are urged to be on the lookout out for this vehicle and take
precautions to ensure their safety. If anyone sees the vehicle or anyone
acting suspiciously, they are urged to call 911 immediately."
