My son and I received Cabelas gift cards as Christmas gifts this year.
Yesterday, seeing as we had little else to do we decided to head to the new Cabelas store in DE to check it out and spend some money. Usually when we get these cards we head up ( or stop by on our way home from New England) the Cabelas in Hamburg PA.
The store is located off of I95 Exit 4A in Delaware (north of the DE rest stop, but south of where I95 splits for Philly or the DE Memorial Bridge). Once you exit I95 you'll need to look for the exit to the mall (it comes up quick). The store in on the mall's "beltway", on the far side - roughly across from the food court. Parking was good, we easily found a spot - surprising considering how close to Christmas we are. I live 5 miles from Bass Pro in Arundle Mills and that place rarely has parking near the store. I think what helps is the store is not really in the mall - but a self standing structure away from the mall with it's own parking lot.
The store is a single level and roughly the same size as the Bass Pro at Arundle Mills, and smaller than the Cabelas in Hamburg.
The Firearm/Archery section is nice - even for us 'black gun aficionados', the camping section is also well stocked. My son (the Scout & backpacker) thought the backpacking bags were limited in selection, and the food was expensive (seriously a civilian MRE for $16 each!??). There was no Carhartt clothing as there is online/in larger stores - but they had a good selection of camo.
Back to the gun section (as that's what our interest is). I went to check out the knives, they had some - but few multi-tools (which is what I was looking for). This is an area where the Hamburg store really shines and this one is lacking.
There were magazines aplenty for ARs and AKs, and a full isle devoted to Magpul gear. There were Slidefire stocks for sale ($349 IIRC) for those looking to burn ammo, and 40rnd PMAGS available to hold that ammo.
They had plenty of pistol magazines, but were light on Glock magazines - while they had mags for the G26 & G42, there were none for the G19
- and Glock magazines were priced at $39.
I will say the ammo selection was outstanding. Had to be at least a half dozen different brands of .223/5.56. From $5.99 steel case up to 0.50/c round M855 packed in steel ammo cans. They had ammo in steel & plastic ammo cans, ammo in vinyl pouches (similar to the old South African 'battle packs'), and in boxes. We picked up some PMC brass cased .223 for $6.79/box. There were several brands of 6.8 SPC in a variety of loads (I picked up some Hornady 110gr OTM that was on sale). They had plenty of 7.62x39 steel cased - but it was priced similarly to that of Bass Pro so we opted to not spend $$ on it.
I did not see any .22LR (but I really wasn't looking for it - though I recall seeing CCI .17 HMR). They had 12 gauge shot shells by the case stacked in one isle.
They also had a decent selection of bullets for reloading, both in typical boxes of 100 and in bulk boxes. You can get 9mm in bulk both in 124 and 147gr weights and a couple bullet styles. I was tempted by the 500rnd box of .223 Hornady 'Zombie' bullets, but went with the more mundane (and less expensive) FMJs. They even had my favorite bullets form Hornady for loading 6.8SPC.
Best part of the day was when we were walking out. They had a set of registers devoted to firearms purchases. I asked a staff member if we had to pay for the ammo at those registers. His reply "No, this is a FREE state you can pay for ammo up front!"
Then there was a nice surprise at checkout - I had forgotten there is no sales tax in DE. So the price on the ammo was the OTD price! Winning!
We spent a bit over an hour in the store looking around and spending some Christmas cash,
