There should be nothing against you using a pistol on your own private property to defend yourself at age 18.

Besides just in the home, 18+ can possess a handgun legally in other circumstances. From the current MN Hunting Regulations Book pg. 22
Persons age 18 or older may carry a handgun to hunt or target shoot. There is no restriction on possessing a pistol. You must be 18 to OWN and 21 to BUY a pistol.
