My 10 year old dog needed to have his "teeth cleaned" estimate $650.

They told me they had to do blood work prior and get him on antibiotics. $220
Results said low white platelets
Retest came in lower $100
Two x-rays 240$ to tell me his bowel is being pushed down, "something isn't right"
Ultrasound and "specialist" $650.

Sir your dog is fat....$1,210 paid

His $650 teeth cleaning will be tomorrow..
I will be posting in the EE this weekend.....

Wow.

Cleaning a dogs teeth? First world problems.

What happened to getting a dog and feeding it scraps? Now people take them to day care, get them massages, clean teeth, buy "special" food. The funny thing is they don't live as long as the old days.

I brought the beast in and dropped him off for a nail trim (with sedation) and when I picked him up it was $400 - it's usually $75.  The beast is a 100lb pit who will bite your face off if you so much as show him the nail clippers, so he requires sedation. The new vet at Bolton decided to bill me for a pre anaesthetic, an anaesthetic, a post anaesthetic, a full office visit and blood work for his fatty tumors, and then on top of it she gave me an estimate of +/- $850 to remove one of his tumors with suspicious mast cells.  Insanity.  I wound up paying the $75 like the last few times but man oh man was that a pain in the ass.

Sadly he's no longer with us.  About two years after the amputation the cancer returned.  I know some people won't agree, but $6K for 2 years was probably the best return on investment I've ever received.

I'll never forget seeing him walk into the waiting room looking like he does in the photo, it was tough.  I only wish I was half as tough as he was

This is how I like to remember him..... RIP buddy (watch till the end, video was shot post op).

No worries mate, starting the hunt for my next pooch.  Sadly the sidecar ride took more out of him after the amputation, but we still rode at least once a week.  People got a kick out of it.

I'll give you a good tip for keeping the choppers clean, and maybe save some money down the road.

Once a month I'd stop at the meat market in Bristol and grab a plastic bag full of "soup" bones.  Basically 2"-4" frozen bones with the marrow still in them, most people used them to make soup stock.  I would give my pup 2-3 a week as a treat, it would keep him occupied for an hour or so, and kept his teeth spotless.  Even at almost 11 years old he still had pearly whites and never had his teeth cleaned once.

If your dog is smaller, they will usually cut them down to a more manageable size... usually for free.

Sorry for the loss man.  He looks happy as fuck in that picture.

I was one of those people that never had pets so when I heard the money some people would pay for vet care, I thought they were insane.

Now that I have a little dog, I realize I was dead wrong.  I'd do everything I could for her.

I considered myself lucky, outside of the amputation Guido (yep, that was his name) had only two emergency vet visits in 11 years.

One was for a GSD that attacked him at my house, requiring 14 stitches to his tender belly, and the first visit was related to him getting sick from eating to much fish (it's a long story).

When he was almost 9 years old he started to limp a little, I thought it was simply arthritis.  He'd take a few steps and be fine, supposedly the cancer he had was supper painful... but he was tough, no doubt about it.

Basically a super low maintenance dog his entire life, or so I thought.  Even after the surgery he was awesome and continued on like nothing ever happened, winters were getting tough as my driveway seems to be a sheet of ice most of the winter, and deep snow and the blister cold made it tough for him to get around outside.

Was he worth every penny, 100%.  For me it's time to move on, had hoped to get an Akita this month, but that kind of fell thru.  The search continues.

Damn. What a great lookin dog, though, thanks for giving it the life I'm sure he deserved.

ETA our GSD turned 1 on the 27th. SO called the vet to set the appointment to get his nuts cut off. I feel horrible, like I'm lying to him every time I look at him. He's gonna hate us next Tuesday.
