I plan to get out of here in the next few years, Taxes, cost of living, stagnant economy, ridiculously wasteful spending, real estate market, congestion of every deteriorating roads are some of the reasons to leave. There is nothing good left here. Tourists don't even come here anymore. This state is a joke thanks to the progressives. Thay have created a nanny state where our lives are planned and controlled. Our money is redistributed to those "in need".

One would have to be stupid not to see this was going to happen once Malloy was reelected. What did people think he was going to do when he floated the idea of lowering the state's income tax (after he raised it)? He is going to have to pull that "revenue" loss from somewhere else. The state is currently a run away train and currently there is no cliff in sight and no desire on the conductor (the voters) to change direction or slow the train down. No one wants to deal with the issue seriously. The governor has two choices. Cut services or raise revenue. He like most politicians, always takes the easy route, raise taxes and let someone else deal with it down the road.

Why would anyone expect this Governor or Democrats in general to take this issue seriously or lower taxes when their entire political ideology is based on expanding the size and scope of government?

Read a statement the other day by some person in the State budget area that went something like this "It's not a tax increase, just a rule change"  Wife said I should make it a bumper sticker.  BTW, was looking at the Fla htf, evidently there's some pending legislation to eliminate tax on firearms and some kind of tax break for range memberships to promote safety, what a difference a state makes.

Almost as bad as this one ftp://ftp.cga.ct.gov/2015/tob/s/2015SB-00001-R00-SB.htm
...in part by establishing a regional tax base sharing initiative...

This is being voted on tomorrow.  It will almost guarantee that our property taxes will be raised.  Good luck to all that stay, but this place is a sinking ship!

LOL at all the progressive buzz words in that proposed bill summary. Yeah I can easily see that one getting passed. Funny but I bet the "fairness" they speak of really means they'll be funneling money from the burbs to their voting block in the inner cities thereby keeping them in power perpetually.

I always chuckle when I see the word "tourism" and 'Connecticut' linked together.  The last thing this state has to offer is itself as a "tourist" destination.   Proof?  Ask yourself, if someone from some other part of the country was looking for touristy things to do when visiting for, say, a week, what attractions would you suggest?  Ok, maybe Mark Twain's house.  Beaches?  Nah.  The beaches anywhere else are more attractive and less congested.  Mountains?  None to speak of.  Oh! I know, Indian Casinos?  Well, maybe but I, for one, will never set foot into a casino especially one owned by another country within my little state.  So, where does one actually send guests as tourists in this state.  The answer is really no where.  Certainly Hartford is a dump with virtually nothing to offer especially after 5pm when it is abandoned to the gangs.

I used to love being a 'Nutmegger" being born here in Granby CT back when it was nothing more than a farm stop.  Now I'm one of those citizens that are working hard to be out of here as quickly as possible so I can enjoy my last years in a free, open state; one where I can exercise my constitutionally guaranteed rights to the fullest extent.  CT has clearly seen a better day and it will be many decades before it can pull up its breeches and begin moving forward again.  Why? Because this governor is "leading from behind" by not getting out in front of the economic problems.  He touts we're in excellent shape and the next day he and his lackeys are "surprised" by the "unanticipated" 1.5 billion dollar shortfall in the economy!  Oh my!  What are they being paid for if it's not to run the economy properly.

Nope, they don't even have the money to fill in potholes.

That's because the people you talk to are probably like those I talk to. They bitch and moan about how bad DMV workers are yet clamor for government run single payer healthcare. By wanting single payer they are asking to have the same types of folks who work at DMV to run their healthcare.

Don't know what the proper word is but I'm sure there is one for many who live here in CT who know the government is broken, who complain daily about that broken government, who hate paying the high taxes her in CT, yet every single fucking election they walk into the voting booth and vote for the very same politicians and political parties who intentionally have broken the government and who constantly raise taxes. They know Malloy flat out was laying when Malloy claimed he wouldn't raise taxes and yet they voted for him anyway knowing he was going to raise taxes.

It's two words, actually: functionally retarded. (No offense meant to those with true metal disabilities.) These people are beyond help. Their intellectual laziness about the causes of their own misery is beyond mind boggling. They simply refuse to acknowledge that it's the very programs and people that they vote for that are the cause of their misery. They never put two and two together or, if they do, they somehow come up with five.

I'd like to lead a mass exodus of producers from CT and have a set of trusted advisers at the borders, (kinda like a de facto border patrol, only to keep people IN) and ask everyone that shows up at the border with a truck full of their stuff a series of questions.

1. Why are you leaving?
2. What kind of work do you do?
3. Who was your last employer?
4. Who did you vote for in the last election?

If they answer any of those questions wrong (and, let's face it, there IS a right and a wrong answer to all of these), they don't get to leave. They get turned around at the border and told to go home. Once we get all the producers out of CT, we all come back to the border and build a 50' high wall all the way around the border...then we fill it with water.

I respectfully disagree, my wife used to be a director for one of the Tourism districts in CT.  There is actually a lot of attractive things here in CT to folks overseas. Living here most of us don't take advantage of the cool stuff we have.  Obviously most of the tourism dollars are spent along the coast as people travel from NYC to Boston, but I was always surprised at the amount of people from overseas that actually came to our state.  I don't remember 100% but I think she told me they did a study where for every $1 in tourism spent on marketing the state saw a $20 dollar investment.  One of the few slam dunk investments the state did, of course they defunded most of the programs......  FDM

Let's fill in the potholes with politicians!

This state has never been a tourist destination. Most of the shoreline is private owned and our public beaches are crowded and dirty. Mark Twain House is something you go to if you live here and your school has a field trip. It is in the ghetto so who would come for that?

Casinos? Fuck the "different country" stuff. If that is the truth then we should have border patrol, toll booths and cops along the border. I am not a gambler anyway. Only have been to them a couple times for work events. They are nothing special. ust big shopping malls with gambling and smoking.

Mystic Seaport is nice. Again not something people will come for more than a few hours away. it is good for maybe one day of walking around.

Submarine museum is good for a few hours.

Leaf peeping. Litchfield gets a few people to come look at leaves. Northern New England gets the bulk of these people because there is touristy stuff to do besides look at dying leaves.

Rome I was born in upstate NY and lived there of CT my whole life. These progressive assholes have ruined the two states I used to love. The politicians that get elected are from the cities and they tax and funnel all the money to these cities. In our case it is all the dead cities that "regular" people are scared to visit or even drive through. In New York all the money and even their water flows to New York City, Westchester and Long island.

Years ago I had dreams of retiring to the area I grew up in. I have fond memories of my youth and friends there. Now, unless something drastic happens,  the idea of moving back to upstate New York for retirement is not feasible. I am headed south where hopefully we can fight off these progressives until I am a very old man.

When I went to bed on election night last November, Foley was in the lead and I fully expected to wake up and hear he had won.  THEN, during the night, the cities reported in, and they overwhelmingly supported Malloy and gave him enough of a majority to win.  If you look at a map of the election, almost the entire state went for Foley (even Newtown), EXCEPT for the cities.  Ne Haven alone was enough to make up for the 20,000 lead Foley had in the rest of the state, and Hartford alone was enough to give Malloy the 25,000 lead he ended up with.

Hartford hasn't had a Republican mayor since the 70's and New Haven hasn't has a Republican mayor since the 50's, so it's obvious the cities routinely vote Democrat with blind servile loyalty no matter how much of a pig sty the Democrat party is turning their cities into.   In short, as long as the cities remain Democrat, they are going to drag the rest of the state into the pig sty with them...and seeing they're the biggest recipients of gifts from the state government Santa Clause, with welfare, unions, liberal shortsightedness, etc, that's probably not going to change until the heavy dose of reality coming our way finally hits them.

High wages and high cost of living is the same as low wages and low cost of living.  worse, even, since high cost of living necessarily means high overhead for businesses.

Fairfield County is the only thing that keeps CT in the "black" when it comes to per-capita income.

I'm a cabinetmaker (surprise) and I had the chance to work down there. I refused. Why? Because they are so rich that they don't give a whit about who is creating for them.  In one case in particular, the wife of the homeowner was chastised by her husband  while redoing their kitchen for going OVER the budget for the HARDWARE on the cabinets by..........get this........$25,000.  That's right.  She spend $25k MORE than was allocated for knobs and handles to open her cabinet doors.  That's the class of people living in CT in Fairfield County and whose income inflates the rest of CT.

In another case one of the designers of the "big dig" in Boston got permission to build a tunnel from the town road around to the back of his house so that no driveway would contaminate the "look" of his house from the road.  So, it goes down and comes out on the back side of his house.  Don't you wish you had the where-with-all to demand building a tunnel to your home?  I don't care how people spend their money.  I really don't but don't hold up that part of the state and call it "normal".

Here in Enfield we can't even get a full-blown Macy's because I was personally told by an executive of Macys that Enfield was tool lower blue-class to attract a high-end Macy's like at Farmington or Ingleside. Same goes for Costco and the rest of the stores here.  Nothing is ever high-end because we're too "blue collar" for them.  This is really what ALL of Connecticut looks like outside of Fairfield County and divorce them from the rest of the state and we'll look more like Alabama.

What a farce.

I think CT May have the largest income disparity in the nation and if not then it's among the highest. Good times.

I will be getting out of here.

I was in Upstate New York at my cousin's wake tonight. Most of that side of the family lives in Germantown, Clermont, Red Hook or Rhinebeck. My other cousin who never leaves the town for anything, born and raised in the house next door to where he lives now told me his is done with New York and is moving. Most likely west. He is fed up with Cuomo, high taxes and the SAFE act. He said "I know you guys got screwed with you gun laws but man your laws are way better than ours."

Even life long residents going back at least 3 generations want to escape the North. These progressives have no clue as the the exodus that will occur in the next 25 years.

Northeast loses 40% of House seats as people flee high-tax states.  “This result is one of the most dramatic demographic shifts in American history. This migration is shifting the power center of America right before our very eyes. The movement isn’t random or even about weather or resources. Economic freedom is the magnet and states ignore this force at their own peril,” said the report.

CT is in a death spiral.  When there's no more blood to squeeze out of the Fairfield stone, it will already be too late.

On the plus side, I'm back in the region for the month and got to go to NGX.

Just how does someone get up to 31,000+ posts!!  How many keyboards have you worn out?? LOL

The legislature in CT yesterday is considering "leveling" the tax levied on cars throughout the state.  They will first remove the "right" for municipalities to levy their own taxes on their own citizens.  Then they will declare a "flat tax" mill rate for ALL automobiles across the state and you and I will be paying that amount directly to the state.  Then, the state will divide up the money to the town that no one is short.  Right.....      So, the towns that have a low mill rate, say 11 mills, will be raised to something like 29 mills so that their money can be spread into the poorer towns/cities.

I must tell you that this run to regionalism has got to stop.  While building regional schools in the mountain areas of the state makes sense since the tiny towns can't support high schools on their own, going regional with towns like Windsor Locks, Wilson, Windsor, and Hartford, for instance, will simply suck the money out of the more successful town and send it to the poor town.  In a lot of cases, the poor towns simply are being run so poorly that they need to be overhauled.  But, they won't stand for that and are demanding that he state intervene with this socialist 'fix' and take my money from me.

Yet another wonderful reason to stay here, right?
