Looking to sell my 2004 pathfinder. Rarely used anymore.

Where should I list it? I've never sold a car before.

should I have it detailed? Also do all the maintenance records add value?

craigslist is a good start and if you live in a high traffic area putting a for sale sign on it gets alot of people to stop.

Craigslist will work, but be ready to weed through the scammers. There are a lot of them.

You could put it in the EE also

When they ask if the item is still available that's usually a dead giveaway. I put a Camaro on craigslist a couple months ago and the first reply I had was a scammer.

Just what I don't want to deal with... but Ibguess if you use a free vendor this is what you get.

I'm thinking I may go with bargain news , ebay and put a for sale sign on it and park it up the street with high visibilty. The pathfinders seem to be in high demand. I shouldn't have any problems selling it. Did some research and I'm pretty impressed with the Resale value on these. It's been turn key for me last 5-6 years, I guess this is pretty standard with Nissan

+1, this is your best bet.

I wouldn't bother with Bargain News or Ebay.

Craigslist really isn't that bad. I would put in the description "no low ballers" etc. Don't list your phone number unless you spell out a few of the digits (prevents internet crawlers gettingit), or just use the systems email function (don't actually list yours, again for the crawlers). Scam emails will be very easy to spot AND to delete.

I have my third car selling through craigslist right now.

If you want to weed out the bullshit, there are two simple things to do. Be clear and precise about these 2 things only, and you will be all set.

1. CASH ONLY, PRICE FIRM - this kills a lot of run around, and helps keep the low ballers away.

2. NO TEXTS OR EMAILS, PHONE CALLS ONLY - this keeps the scammers and tire kickers away. Generally, only people serious about buying your car are willing to call and talk to you. Its just too damn easy for someone to shoot you an email and ask you some bullshit questions. Sure, not a big deal from a guy or two, but you will get inundated with, "Hey, does it start?", "Hey, do the tires hold air?", "Hey, what oil did you use?", "Hey, will you take $10 or trade for an ice cream scoop?" . . . . . . . . . . "

Bold them in your ad, and don't reply to emails or texts. I put it right in my ad that I will not reply to either, that they have to call.

Be very descriptive, too., it saves everyone time and energy. I include too many pictures, list everything that doesn't function 100%, and I list all repairs made in the last 50k miles (and major repairs outside of that range, like timing chains etc, and at what mileage they were replaced).

It helps keep the questions to a minimum, and you'll mostly just get calls for people wanting to set up a time to come take a look.

Goodluck.

ETA: I wouldn't spend money detailing it unless its horrifically filthy. But I clean the cars up as much as my patience allows. Think about it as if you were going to look at it . .

Here is what they look like

Thanks for your response. Please understand that I am not around for inspection due to the nature of my job, I serve in the U.S Army as a CAS(Civil Affairs Specialist (38B)) currently on active duty and its been quite busy on the field these days with lots of restrictions, strictly no calls for security reasons but we have secure access to the internet as our major means of communication for now. I am OK with your asking price and if you don't mind, I can only pay through PayPal at the moment be cause its the most secure way to make or receive payment online this is why I'll prefer using PayPal to pay you, all I need is your PayPal email to make the payment and if you don't have a PayPal account, its pretty easy to set up at www.paypal.com. I have a few questions for you.

Are you the original owner? How long have you owned it? Whats its condition, any damages and what is your reason for selling?

I hope you consider my offer. I am ready to buy.   I'll arrange for pick up after you have confirmed and received payment. Thanks for understanding, hope to read from you soon.

I had a classic car I sold this summer. had it on Craiglist for a couple months. One real human being called and he never showed up. The rest were scammers.

One scam is: I will have my agent look at the car and pick it up. He will have a check for more than you are asking and once you settle on a price go to your bank and give him the difference in cash. Had about 10 of those calls. Give me a fake check, take my cash and car. Then I lose my money and car. Plus this shit head know where I live. No thanks.

The other scam is a "broker" calls and says he has buyers for cars of this type. For $250 sign up fee he will guarantee a buyer. Of course the $250 is check or money order only. I told this asshat "find me a buyer and I will give you $500 after we do the transaction". He hung up on me. Did this 3 times. Third time I just told him listen asshole find another sucker.

I had the best luck with eBay. Sold it in 5 days for my asking price to a guy from CT.

If you have high traffic area to park it that works the best. My neighbor lives on the corner of my quiet street and a busy state road. he has shit park out front all the time. Sells everything that way. Cash and no fee, ads or commissions.

Sold two cars on craigslist.

It's so easy a caveman can do it.  If you cannot navigate scammers or people trying to get a good deal stay away. Personally I got $6,000 for my car that I was getting offered $2,500 from the dealers on the trade in.

Good luck with the sale!

Good info on the car.  I have an old truck I'm gonna have to put up next spring and look for something better for work when the weather is bad.  I put an apartment up for rent years ago.  I had to change the ad to put in that there will be a criminal background check and credit check done on you.  That cut down on all the crazy phone calls quickly.  You really have to watch your back when you put an add on CL.

You get some very...interesting...people and then you get some normal people who are actually looking to buy what you have. You just have to weed through the BS, be firm on everything and let them know it's a business transaction and not a charity. also make sure you put "NO TRADES" in you add or people will try and pawn their shit off on you.

In the last 1.5 years I sold 3 vehicles.  All sat on Craigslist for a long time.....constantly got scammers, then the bullshit questions like guys have already said.

97 wrangler
03 mustang
07 yamaha r6

all in pretty much mint shape(so not junk).

Im talking about 3 months or so they sat there.  Ocassionaly I'd get a call from someone I thought was serious, but nope, always bullshitters.  I actually had a kid call me from my hometown that I graduated HS with....he asked for me to drastically drop the price on the bike....I laughed and told him hell no, and that I didnt like him in HS and hung up on him

Then my fathers friend offered to let me put them on his lawn in a high traffic area.....each of them sold within a week.

So my point is, you'll get some interest from online posts, but having them out in the public view is the easiest, and fastest way to sell vehicles.

If you go the online route, follow zegers post, he nailed how to handle craigslist...I actually wish I had done it like that!

As a guy who just recently purchased a Jeep from Craigslist, put a phone number, fuck the email.
Include plenty of pics and be very descriptive.
Include this: No price negotiations over the phone, don't call until ready to buy. Be ready to sell, don't make impossible schedules to meet and do the deal.
I bought the jeep in Long Island because all the idiots here in Ct don't know how to sell a fuckin car.
I'm still getting emails asking if I'm still interested ...3 weeks for these idiots to reply wtf!

If you could, please edit out the part with his name and road. He didn't kill me.

He was actually a wicked cool guy - retired military, CCDL member, NRA instructor. We spent more time talking guns and politics than we did about the car.
