So I finished shellacking last night, and mounted everything up today!
I'm completely done with this MAK 90, and am very happy with how it turned out.  In the end I spent close to the cost of a pre89 Type 56, but I preferred the experience of doing the work to this rifle rather than buying one that was already ready to go.

I like the blonde wood. It looks just like one of the Hungarian AMMS's I just finished up. Nice job.

This guy is dying for a polytech legend makeover.

I'm not very knowledgeable about AKs, but is there any dif with the RPK length bbl .. Other than the few extra inches?

Chop that long sucker down to 16" .. Thread and install evil.

My next gun project will be a norinco ak.

Either an underfolder or a milled 386 all wood.

*edit -ffl in NH.. Can u legally drive there to pick it up?  I think if it's a long gun and g2g in both states, f2f is ok.  U could def get some mags up there and throw them into the river before you get to mass.

I would say if your not looking for an RPK, skip on doing an RPK conversion to AK. ...unless of course you'll be chopping the barrel and threading it yourself.  Then I'd say go for it.  But I would think you could easily get a milled mak90 for less than 800, and go from there to build up a legend.  Either way it's win win

I over paid.... But had a great time with NUcadet07  today doing a ton of work just to get the gas block off- fsb off so I can have a cleaning rod and changing out the trigger! Why..  Because we can .

Now I want one with a nice wood stock.  I'd like a poor condition one just need to find one!
I learned today you really just assemble an AR and you actually truly build an AK. Thanks again NUcadet07!

I finally found some time to stain and seal the stock set, now it only needs a finish coat and it's done.
Pictures were taken with my ipotato in crappy lighting so it looks darker then what it is.

Couple of coats of sealer

No problem, I had a good time too. As to the trigger spring, he didn't. I however, while trying to warn him of how that can happen, did.

ZAR Golden Oak and I added some yellow dye to it.
Did you pick up some of the AK63D kits everyone had a few months back too? That is my next project, I finished up de-milling it and next is barrel work.

Hmm.. just checked my original handguard and it has it, but not the new one, hopefully it has no purpose.

Yea I wish I took a pic.  It was like pinkish blonde.  Ive never seen this color before, on any country let alone chinese.  Its kind of like roseyish, but not a solid color, more streaky.

But it has the thumbhole stock, so its original wood, just a different finish.

Little PSA to you guys building from 80%s

Any of you guys that plan on building on a Childers Guns LLC pre heat treated 80% or a Polish 80% please be advised that you will need to trim the upper rails which the bolt carrier rides on and there is a possibility you will also have to to trim the magazine well. I've had to do these on quite a few builds, just passing on the info.

I'm having an issue with the few magazines I have... don't know if its the rear lip on the mag or the mag well needs to be opened up more, I'm still looking into it.

And I just about ruined my receiver recently, I was installing the center support but didn't use the bushing that came with it because I felt it was not keeping the dimensions I needed. So I cut up a piece of brake line tubing to the size that held the measurement and gave it a couple of light bursts from the air riveter to form the head...Big Mistake... there was too much space between the rivet and tubing and it just about sucked in the side of the receiver. Luckily I was able to drill it out and it flexed back somewhat. I learned the best way to do a center support is to use a hammer.

AK-Builder has a riveting jig for the front, rear, and center support rivets which does and excellent job and makes the rivets look better than factory in many cases. Then again, due to cost, it is only worth it if you plan on doing several builds.

From what I have read and found ALL Chinese AKs are CT pre-ban.

There is 2 bans you need to worry about.

1. CT ban. All Chinese AKs are pre ban to us here in CT.

2. Federal Ban. These are the ones advertised on Gunbroker and Armslist as Pre-ban. These are the one ones that bring big money because they come with all the evil features and do require US made parts to be 922r compliant.

Your best option is what others have done. Buy a clean example of a Mak90. Then if you want a bayonet lug and cleaning rod just replace the front sight and gas block yourself. This is what I will be doing to the one I picked up.

I found my Mak90 for $700 including shipping and transfer fee. It is super clean and not a slant back receiver. Bought my NHM91 for $680 shipped and transferred. Again beautiful and clean. I will be making the Mak90 more evil by putting back the bayonet lug and cleaning rod. The NHM91 I am not sure about doing that yet. The barrel is a different size so I have to located parts that will work or make my own. Right now I am finishing the proper furniture for them.

Who wants to guess when the last time his clothes were washed, or his life vest was tested to verify performance

Lmao, does that vest count as his 400sq/inches of hunter orange!

Sure I would be glad to help. What town are you in?

I am over by Olympic Park.

I would not worry about the stock. Unless you like the thumbhole stock you will change out the furniture anyway. That one looks like it has been painted. You can see where it shows wear on the corner. I would try to find one that has not been painted. The original finish is blueing.

Underfolder!

If its a gun you plan to shoot- you want a side folder or a straight stock.
Under folders will typically become wobbly - not the best choice
