Went to kennebunkport with the family this weekend . Friday went all the way to the fryeburg fair. Awsome fair, we’ve been a few times but didn’t get around as much as this time . Saturday my wife wanted to pot around in town , have lunch and go to the beach. 10 footers at the shore along with 150+ Canadian surfers . In the middle of all the cute town shopping I was lucky enough to sneak in the shipyard store for a growler. Today we headed home and swung into the Fremont grass drags . Haven’t been in a couple years but boy did it make me miss a sled .

Another bear in our yard the other day. Now.......the 1in a million chance that something bad happened, bears/kids. What would be a good backyard/home bear gun? Something that my wife could also handle. So, no 500 S&W. I always carry my G19 with a reload. I think that’ll just piss him off. I have a 870, but keep that in my truck. 300 blackout (I have) with good super-sonic hunting ammo? 458 socom upper (dont have)? |

View Quote But, I'd go with a shotgun over anything else. A fullbore slug would probably be best (smooth bore ok, w/ proper choke), but I keep our 870 ready w/ 8-00 Buck. Great all-purpose round for anything deadly and in close range. |

West Hartford is being overrun by black bears. I've had them in my yard as well. One asshole tore down the woodpile that Zerg had so nicely stacked near my driveway.
This past weekend, a complete family of four just sat in a driveway and open garage around the corner from me and happily ate garbage and made a mess of the cans without a care in the freaking world. People drove by, took some pics and just watched. They gave not one shit. It's just bears doing bear stuff and black bears want to avoid you even more than you want to avoid them. Now they are still a wild animal no matter how cool I think they are so don't be stupid around them. When I sit on my patio, I used to have a Benelli with Brenneke slugs. But last night I had my Colt 1911 .460 Rowland which is just easier to lug around. My plan is just to pay attention and go inside if they show up. |

View Quote more Alaskans carry slug guns for bear protection than any other firearm, this includes guides. it will obviously not have the same penetration at longer distances, but up close they are the best bear medicine. Brenneke Black Magic Magnums have deadly results. bear spray is also good to have around. |

in a hostile bear encounter a handgun is not the best choice, but if i had to carry a side arm other than a 44 mag or larger, i would have a 10mm with a extra mag.
any 9mm or larger will stop a bear dead with a side or full frontal brain shot. the only issue is the brain is not large, a little larger than a ob longed baseball. Attached File Attached File |

Bears just doing bear stuff....I get it. But, one of these days someone will be in the wrong place or intentionally mess with a bear and it’ll get ugly. I’m always aware they might show up while we’re outside. Even with our 4’ fence, they easily get in the backyard. |
