Been balls deep in a basement renovation. Trying to get it done before football and wood burning season starts.

Stripped down to studs, reinsulated, drywalled, taped.

Painted the ceiling today, whitewashed the chimney brick, stained the wooden ledge and final sanded the tape joints. If all goes well tomorrow I'm painting the walls. Electrical ervice upgrade Saturday, should be doing trim by Sunday.

I don't remember if I posted this here, but I renovated the other half last month. It's just laundry and storage over there. I'm doing the kitchen (directly above) in the fall and have to move a bunch of electrical (stove microwave, outlets etc) so I left the drop ceiling out for now.

I'm also hopeful to get my solar up this fall but that might be wishful thinking at this point. I'm only one man so it might wait until the spring.

The wall around the service and the trim leading up to it are unfinished because of the impending service upgrade.

The whole basement used to be that old panel board, painted like 15 times, and was poorly insulated. There used to be a shitty bar between the two halves, too, and a closet in the storage side. It was just poorly used space so I deleted a couple walls as well.

Picked up the cabinets off a Facebook group. They were fire damaged (mostly just smoke) so I refinished them. Lol, soft close hardware etc, they're 100 times nicer than our kitchen ones hahahaha

I had a Mathews z7 that I traded for this. It was the top Mathews bow of its time back in 2011. I have a similar one still . This halon is Mathews hot bow this year. Mathews comes out with a break through every 4-5 years and that when I upgrade. This halon 32 is going to be good for a long time

honestly there isnt much difference from the z7 i traded in which is from 2010, to this halon 32. the halon shoots 10 fps faster with the same weight and arrow, is a little smoother, and a little quieter. over all its 10% nicer. this is kinda of why i wait to upgrade, things dont change much

I need some CTHTF food guidance. I smoked some beef short ribs in the Weber smokey  mountain for 5 hrs and just put into the crock pot. From the smell I used to much apple (smoke) wood. Finishing in crock pot with shallots, garlic, mushrooms, carrots and beef broth. Any suggestions on what I can add to mask some of the smokeyness? Thank you!

Thanks biker, went and got some pumpkin head this weekend. As for the apples trees, I don't remember if they were dwarf or not. They were end of the season gala trees from local lowes, don't have the tag anymore. Just throwing a dart that they would survive the first year and they did. Looks like a have a few more years to go.

Ginger and avocado are both disgusting. Ginger ale is, ok, and it's a shaky ok at best.

Wife's birthday, took her shooting for her first time. Had Andover all to ourselves, as usual on a weekday morning. She was a big fan of .22 and she actually did very good. I've taken a lot of newbies shooting and I spend most of the time telling them to take their finger off the trigger. I didn't have to tell her to take her finger off the trigger once. The opposite actually, when shooting handgun she took her finger off the trigger after every shot no matter what. The first five shots I put 1 round in each time, racked it and set it down so she didn't have to learn any function, just pick it up, aim, put her finger on the trigger and shoot.

Then when I put 3 or 5 rounds in the mag she would still take her finger off in between shots, lol. We'll work on technique etc down the line, the only thing i worked on was getting her to lean forward a little. For now, she did a great job getting acclimated to the sound and feeling. Slowly dissolving the mystique.

She was ringing the 100 yard steel with the rifle from the bench incredibly consistently. Out of 60 or so rounds she only missed the 6" plate twice. She was intimidated by the larger calibers so I didn't push the issue. She watched me shoot it a couple times and that was it. She shot the full size M&P 9mm  a dozen or so rounds, too, but her arms were already tired from an hour of shooting so we didn't keep going. I'm surprised she did it at all, she has dainty little office lady arms. She really liked the bolt action .22.

We also learned we need to go get her different ear-pro. The Howard Leights I use leave a gap under her ear where her jaw ends. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try Peltors or Sordins.  Gel seals are a must. Very comfy.

Agreed on ginger except for ginger ale.  Ginger is one of the best things for an upset stomach which is why we have ginger ale around all the time.  Those nausea lollipops for pregnant women are mostly ginger.

She did wear plugs underneath, but there are significant studies that say, with 5.56 anways, that is actually bad. It increases harmonic vibration or something (IIRC).

She complained about noise/concussion being too loud two different times.

I'd like something electronic so she can still hear me talking to her, too.

I have found the electronic Sordins to work best.  They were designed at first for the rock drilling/blasting industry (MSA is the company)

Be prepared for sticker shock but she's worth it.  She is worth it, right?  (You best say yes, it's early in the game for you.)

I don't know where you heard that but I'd verify your sources. While doubling up ear protection is not directly additive, it absolutely increases the total rating. Very few over ear muffs on the market reduce impulse peak sound of 5.56 to safe levels. And in-ear only does not protect against bone transduction of unsafe sound/vibration. Together is about as safe as it gets.

Eta: Howard Leights do have that annoying gap. They don't have a gel ear seal upgrade like Sordin unfortunately. Which is a shame because they're 80% as good for 1/6 the price.

It's going to take me a while to find it. Maybe it's different for different people. I typically only wear the Howard Leights but one time I went shooting with Bikerman and I shot one of his fucking mondo calibers with only the muffs. (Eeeeeeeeeeeee) I had to double up with plugs. But after that I went back to shooting one of my ARs with double plugs and, I shit you not, it hurt more than the huge caliber without the plugs. Not like a "loud noise hurt", but more of a piercing pain deep in the ear. I took the plugs out and continued and was fine. I never thought anything of it other than it was weird and then one day I stumbled upon a thread here about it. They had graphs and a couple links supporting the claim (No graph on the internet is ever wrong, right? Lol).

I don't remember what it was that they said caused it, but it seemed pretty concrete and my personal experience made it easy for me to believe it. Perhaps it was bone vibration like you're saying or something, but whatever it was, it sucked.

Thank you both for the suggestion, I will absolutely go look at these Sordins. I'd spend any amount of money to get her happily into shooting.

Suppressors are on the way but we'll be waiting for a while yet.

ETA: I looked for about ten minutes and can't find anything. I want to clarify I'm not trying to say people SHOULDNT double up. I had just read that at a certain decibel combined with conclusive force that plugs combined with muffs could amplify some affect.

Ear pro@amazon

These are awesome.  My wife and I have been using them for 6 years(same ones).

Aside from PITA battery changes they're fantastic.

I do want some good in the ear protection for matches though.  After 3-4 hours I get tired of having over the ears on.
Aside from that, these are the bees knees.

I have the Peltors, but also have molded, electronic earpro, like hearing aids. I went to a hearing specialist and had them made. They pour this stuff in your ear and get an exact fit; I'd guess similar to what musicians have done. Not cheap. They were around $800, over 10 years ago. But you could have a conversation while an M2 was running through a belt, right beside you.

OSHA recommends both plugs and muffs be used when near centerfire rifles.

There's usually a guy at the ATA state shoot doing the custom ear things for $200 or so. He's def not an Otolaryngololist (I totally had to Google that ) though, but gives you custom molded plugs that a ton of guys I know swear by (I hang out mostly with a bunch of old fart Trap shooters ).

Pretty shucking great effort.

I've never worked a raw bar, but have opened plenty of mangled crustations.
There's a really neat tool for home use that is basically a fulcrum with a knife point, on top of a tray. It lets you easily open the most pesky oyster or clam and save any juice spillage. I don't own one but have used it before, I'll try to find the link.

ETA: This thing, works good if you have a lot of shells to open.
