Some might not know the history behind the Tesla/Edison AC/DC feud. Tesla, backed by George Westinghouse, back the AC system, which really was the better system compared to Edison's DC electrical system. AC can be transmitted long distances with very little loss, while DC had huge transmission losses and would have required generating stations in almost every neighborhood, AC was far more practical. Edison backed the DC system, and to demonstrate how dangerous AC was, electrocuted an elephant, but Tesla/Westinghouse won in the end, so we still have the AC distribution system pioneered by Tesla.
