It can be scary, but sometimes things happen that force the issue. After closing my business that I had been at 20 years, I made a few changes out of necessity, after priding myself on how well I treated my employees, I was treated terribly by more than one, finally found a small family owned company in OKC where I worked for over 8 years, it wasn't perfect but on average I was treated pretty well, I loved that job. Eventually they sold out to a consolidator, a company that consolidates similar businesses, not long after they took over I got sick and was off work for a year. I finally took another job for a couple of years but just wasn't able to keep up with things anymore so retired for good.
That job that I loved was as a territory manager, outside sales, working on my own, straight commission, but nobody looking over your shoulder or stabbing you in the back. My job was to go around to company purchasing agents, make friends with them, then go around and visit your friends about once a month, oh and if you get an order while there its just gravy! Lots of competition from other companies, but I was responsible for what I did, if I don't do a good job, no commission, made more money doing that than ever before.
