Went to HH today to shoot the new 300 AAC and the 556 hBar...was as much fun as the heat and being sick would allow.

Something always entertains me everytime i go into HH...you always see these huge button stretchers wearing these faded out, torn, really tight "pro" shooting shirts and sometimes even jackets....you know, the kind you would get if you went to some national ISPC competition somewhere..with your sponsors and such on it...i guess it makes them feel "pro"....too "pro" for my sleeveless t-shirt on a hot day wearing ass...

Anyways had some fun...but heat got to me and my lungs couldnt take anymore of the powder smoke so had to leave. Respitory tract infections suck...my first one and i hope my last...talk about feeling like being curb stomped...

I generally stay away from there, but like to deal with their bow shop from time to time. Right now I would do anything for just a minute of range time. Cut the end of my thumb off at work the other day, therefore, I will be down for a while. Glad you had fun!

You're tougher than me, I won't go near the H&H range during the hot months, which is 3/4 of the year.  I just don't get how with all the expansion and upgrades they've done, adding real air conditioning wasn't one of them.  I like H&H which is why not being able to use the range most of the year sucks.  Hopefully someday they'll think air conditioning is as important as the folks who shoot and want to shoot there.

I personally think their entire facility sucks...but i dont know where else to go with a 30 yard or longer range right now. They seem to just let the ranges run into the ground. Most of the chairs are bent or broken, no tables in most of the bay areas, and no way to set a rest up on their shit stands. I mean seriously...how much does it cost to replace a few card table chairs? Make the shooting benches better? Just doesnt seem like they are interested in keeping it up. If it was like a corporate location of a chain or something i could see it..but my understanding is it is a husband wife team that owns it...most ma/pop shops of anything are usually better kept. Now the inside away from the ranges are pretty nice...but none of that does people like me any good. Anyways, none the less, still was fun. Wish it was cooler and wish i wasnt sick, but life is such.

There are many things I wish H&H would do for the range, but they are the best game in town.

I wish they would
1) add air conditioning
2) add distance markers on the floor or walls
3) add better lighting
4) get rid of the wires and use the new action target system in all their ranges (because the wires break all the time and are too low... I hit my head on the control box all the time and for matches, the wires are a huge annoyance/safety concern)

Yeah, the target system is horrible.  I guess it's easier to say the entire firearms range is junk or right on the line of becoming junk.  They advertise on their website that their range was "the first five star range in the nation".... I'm not sure when that was but it had to be a loooooong time ago because now the range is in such a state of disrepair they are barely hanging on to one star.  It's a shame because they have the potential to be a great range.

Great store (albeit way over priced driving folks to buy elsewhere)
Great cafe (excellent burger)
Archery range on the verge of greatness (excellent archery staff)
Firearms range floundering and spiraling downward and only thing holding them back.

Who does the rating? What organization does that? Yeah they have banners hanging up in the store claiming such...with the exception of the AC issue...everything else i have seen problems with seem to be superficial and not too expensive to repair. The wire target mover things work as intended from what i see...they move the targets back and forth..havent had one break or stop working on me. And when i go there it is generally to sight 1-2 rifles in, so i move them back and forth allot.

How expensive is it to buy a load of 2x4's, circular saw, screws, poly glue, couple saw horses, and some basement floor or porch paint to build decent tables for each cluster of bays? About 2 hours or so per table, wait for it to dry, additional coat of paint, dry and put it in the bay.

Seems like it is just a lack of concern...as the effort isnt too bad. See what happens when Wilshire opens up.

Who needs distance markers?

People that want to practice at known distances to gauge increases in ability.

Any 9mm pistol will be within .75" of your target out to 50 yards if zeroed properly.  .40 and .45 are similar.  Therefore, it doesn't really matter what the distance is when shooting at unknown distances within pistol range.

However, it does matter for determining your ability and practicing.

Just an FYI, H&H has range markers painted on the walls, unfortunately in usual H&H fashion the marks don't actually say what yardage the marks are.  I only knew because a range officer told me.  The range officers there I've dealt with have always been good folks.

The first one is 7 yards but I don't remember after that, I think they are at 10 yard increments after the 7 but I'm not positive.  Why they don't mark them is yet another H&H mystery.

Latest word is Wilshire Gun is almost ready to open.  They are going to have the largest selection of full auto guns for rent in the entire nation including a Thompson, an MP5 and................a GATLING GUN!!!! They will have a cafe that serves alcohol but once you consume any you can't go to the range plus an 8,000 square foot retail sales area.  They are finishing up installing countertops, sinks and faucets and such then have to wait on certifications from the fire marshal and that kind of stuff.  I think the estimate is about 3 weeks until opening.

Full auto is something you try once and then its like yeah, it was cool and move on. Got my fill of that in the service with our M60's, M2's M16's and even the MK19 grenade machine gun....i dont know about most, but the whole alcohol in the range thing just doesnt fit too well with me...they can have all the safe guards in place they want inside...but out in the parking lot is a different story...but to each his own.

Iam gonna check out Banner Rd and see what thats about...maybe here this next week if i am over this respritory tract infection.

You can't control if someone wanted to drink in any parking lot.  The alcohol thing has been done in several high end ranges around the country for years without a single problem, I don't see where it would be any different here.

The full auto thing is less about shooting full auto and more about shooting cool FA's that most folks would never get a chance to shoot like the MP5 and Thompson.  As the guys on the various gun shows say after dumping a mag in a cool gun "if that don't make you smile, there's something wrong".  Plus a lot of people who've never been in the military have never even seen a full auto in real life, let alone shoot one.  I had the opportunity to let some guys from Australia and New Zealand shoot my Blackhawk .45 Colt a couple months ago.  These guys were at H&H and were shooting a handgun for their first time ever.  They rented a Super Redhawk .44 mag and when they were done I let them load, shoot and unload my Blackhawk .45 Colt so they could shoot a "cowboy" gun.  They were as excited as can be.

Disappointing H&H doesn't care more  about their range. Must be making enough money on safes, guns, and other products to care.  After Wilshire opens up I'm sure their range customers will go down drastically (especially with the 100 yard ranges at Wilshire). Recalling looking forward to this Wilshire as I have never shot out past 50 yards, how bad does that suck...
Thinking about going to banner on Sunday, never been so it will be new to me.  Anyone else planning on going to banner this holiday/ football weekend?

I've never been to Banner, my medical issues don't let me get out much and I hate going alone.  How much does it cost to shoot there?

$10 per person per day, and you can leave and come back if you wish.
you'd have to either live close, or be doing something close to leave and come back.
hmm.. onion burgers in El Reno, maybe?
chicken at Eischens?

Harry has equipment to rent (sleds, spotting scopes, eye protection) but it's very well used. bring your own.
he also has a limited amount of popular caliber ammo for sale, at prices higher than a DEAL but lower than a gouging.
indoor bathroom, pop and bottled water for sale.

no frills, no country club. a gun range.(although it is covered, and almost always has a breeze)

Hmm...we have talked about trying out Eischan's for years, how far away is it from the range?  Might just be the reason to make the drive.

west a couple miles to 81 in El Reno, then north 13 miles to Okarche.
you"ll pass the Lucky Star Casino on the way.
Eischen's is worth going to (during the week!), just to cross it off the list, but it's chicken, and you can only do so much with chicken.

last time i went a whole fried chicken was $9 carry out.
if you do the carry out try to open the package so it doesn't get steamy soggy.
they do have a "restaurant" section next to the bar (connected) where the grocery store used to be.
