I carry concealed and all my holsters have a simple open top with no retention. I've been contemplating OC and would like your recommendations for a suitable retention holster. Thanks.

Might consider 511 Tactical Thumb Drive Level-II Pistol Holster for a reasonably priced holster.  Safariland 6285 Drop Level II Duty Holster SLS, depends on if you can get a discount or find a good used one.

This holster we were issued to wear around the FOB in Iraq many years back when we were allowed to wear our diver shorts during down time.  I scoffed at it and it sat for a while.  I decided to use it, and now its for my everyday carry, it has been a gem, but different strokes for different folks.

It has two spots for your belt to loop through.  The inner section the belt goes between your waist and the gun, not a fan personally.  The outer loop the belt goes outside of the pistol allowing it to rest very close to your body.  I carry an XD9 Sub, wear athletic cut shirts and I don't profile.  The awesome thing about this holster is when I know I am headed to gun-UNfriendly spots or need to wear my other guns, it isn't gun specific so my LC9 fits, Governer fits, XD, Kimber 1911... all same holster.

It isn't perfect, but what is?  I am also a Lefty, so slim pickin's anyway.

I do not use the button retention.  My wife often tries to suprise me at home by trying to pull my gun out of the holster.  The belt on the outside of the gun keeps it very tight.  It has never fallen out, I often wrestle with my 85lb dog.  Neither the dog or the gun leave my side.

I use mainly Blackhawk SERPAs (save the diatribes if you don't like them, I don't care), and custom leather OWBs with thumbsnap retention from. Backwoods Leather (he can be found at most gunshows).

I use a Galco M6X.  It's similar to the 5.11 Thumb Drive.

ETA: Corrected random capitalization.

I should have stated that I carry a Kahr K9. The options for molded plastic holsters are slim for the Kahr. I may have to go with leather and a simple thumb snap, but I do like the thumb drive type holsters that have been mentioned here.

SERPAs suck.

Sorry, couldn't let that go.

Why? I see lots of people say that but I like mine. Only thing I know of is people pulling the trigger when they draw but with my XD my finger naturally lines up on the slide.

I don't know one serious shooter that uses a Serpa.  They are inherently unsafe and also lock up with just a little debris in them.

The Safarliand ALS is the best retention holster out there.  Here's a video of a typical SERPA lockup.

Thanks for the help, guys. The Safariland ALS looks good. I'll probably have to get my old but NIB S&W 1911 out of the safe, or buy a new handgun altogether if I am going to be able to OC with that retention holster (or others). I'm short on handguns and long on rifles.

I loved my Blackhawk as well.

I'd buy another...but they don't make one for either of my current pistols...

This.  I used Serpas for a long time until I bought the Safariland.  The difference is huge.  Much better quality.

Saifairland ALS…

I have had two friends shoot themselves with SERPAS.

Hmmm. I've had a SERPA for about 6-8 years, I've heard of the rocks and shit blocking the button, and I can see how that could easily happen.

I always thought when folks were saying ALS they meant the big rototop duty holsters (which I have a few of, and heartily recommend if you're using a duty belt).

I just looked up what it really was, and I think I will need to pick one of those up. Look pretty nifty. Do they make an open-bottom one, that I could use with all 3 frame sizes for Glocks?

I usually use a 5.11 thumbdrive for my M&P .40C  for open carry.

My G19 ones only fit G19/22 etc ... They are great holsters otherwise, and some configurations can be found for ~$40.

The Army periodically does some seriously dumb shit, to wit the UCP, and now this.

I picked up the Safariland ALS in the EE. I like it but it certainly does stick out like the duty holster that it is. No worries though, it's my open carry holster for if/when I decide to do that here in VA. Concealed is easier.
